25. Like the shoes, like the belt, love the dress, but
not altogether and not in February. The dress screams April.

That winter white suit and the gray textured tunic are great, as well.

disappointed. I would like to see a woman who stands up for other women....especially poor women. And who the hell cares what color her shoes are? I don't.

Oh...we have fallen so far backward. I can't wait to leave this shallow culture.

9. Seriously....
.... you're gonna have to come up with something a little more original than that.

As part of Lets Move!, the campaign to end childhood obesity, First Lady Michelle Obama is taking on food deserts. These are nutritional wastelands that exist across America in both urban and rural communities where parents and children simply do not have access to a supermarket. Some 23.5 million Americans – including 6.5 million children – currently live in food deserts. Watch the video below and learn what the First Lady is doing to help families in these areas across the country.

21. Maybe she should
post various economical, yet nutritious recipes on line. And exactly what percentage of Americans are basically illiterate?

I have met many young families who live off nothing but processed foods...and they have lots of fresh foods to select from. No one COOKS anymore. They don't know how. I spoke to one young mother and she was distraught. Her son was soon to be eating 'real food' and she had no idea what to do. She and her husband live on frozen pizza. Her face was covered in acne from such a horrid diet.

It never entered her mind to go to the library and get a book on child nutrition.

There is no critical thinking skills out there in many, many young people. The school systems are broke...they only teach you to pass a nationalized test.

Our culture has slide so far backward. Hell, if you are serious about kids not eating junk, ban their f*cking commercials like we did on cigs and booze.

Oh...that might step on the toes of too many campaign contributors, wouldn't it?

It's all a big circus...believe what you want, but this country is run by Big Biz and they tell the political minions exactly what to do. This isn't a Democracy anymore.

Go buy yourself some yellow shoes....that'll make you feel better.

23. I dont know how what groceries in the inner city are like where YOU live...
.... but the ones here (and in most of the country) lack the produce selection that stores in the suburbs have. Knowing HOW to cook is an issue, but even if a parent wanted to cook a fresh meal, they'd have to drive/take a bush/whatever miles to get to quality food.

28. You have a fattening
piece of pie as your avatar.

I live in a 'fly over state' that is still 55% agriculture but has lost all its manufacturing.

Libraries....free and full of info on prenatal care, nutrition, and anything else you would want. Free.

If you can't get fresh veggies, what the hell is wrong w/ frozen or canned? That's what I eat when fresh produce is not in season. I opened a can of pears today and added some grated cheese to them.

What do you mean by driving miles? I don't have a grocery store next door. If you live in a major metropolitan city, obviously you can get to a suburban grocery store by bus. We do it. Elderly have taxi miles to go to grocery stores.

Everyone seems so defeated...and always has an excuse to be lacking.

Figure it out, man. It's not like you have to ride a horse and read by candle light. Or cut wood for warmth.

30. "Everyone seems so defeated"
... perhaps because we spend too much time bashing each other and telling one another our efforts aren't good enough. You're not the only woman who likes to see women stand up for one another (or rather, not try and knock one another down.)

22. I am sure she feels
better. And I glad she makes you feel better. Why not just ban junk food commercials...like we did cigs and booze? Issue everyone a cook book after you teach everyone to read.

Canned vegetables are a decent alternative to fresh....having fresh green beans year round is fairly new along w/ this thing called 'globalization.' But they don't fill up a kid who is really hungry.

Have you been to a grocery store lately? Used to be 4 cans of green beans for a $1. Now...you're lucky if you can get a can for 50 cents...and that is on sale. Look at commodity prices of sugar, cocoa, beef, chicken, sugar, etc....to the f*cking moon.

Now her husband wants to stop helping with the Heating Bill...hell, if they don't freeze us to death, they'll starve us.

This administration cares nothing about the needy. They care about those Big Businesses that will fund their campaigns. PERIOD.

And I see you are all about Baseball. Wow.

7. Love the shoes. But...is that a big red cumberbund around her waist?
Or is she holding a purse? Not crazy about that, if it's a cumberbund. Maybe if it were smaller. But I love the color combination of black, white, red, with the yellow shoes. I'm not brave enough to do that.

18. I wasn't going to say anything, but it's one of those "boob belts" she likes so much.
I had hoped that she stopped wearing them. She doesn't need a wide belt under her chest, it cuts her figure in half and it emphasizes her backside. The dress is lovely enough and the shoes provide a color statement. I think that Michelle is doing a great job as first lady, but I don't get the constant comparisons with Jackie Kennedy. Michelle's taste in clothing is far more eclectic than Jackie's, who tended to play it safe. Sometimes I love what she's wearing, other times not so much.

33. That's what I was thinking. It's too wide and goes up to her boobs, and cuts her in half.
A cumberbund can be flattering, but it has to be a certain width and such.

Yes, I agree. Michelle's taste in fashion is more modern, maybe avant garde, than I care for sometimes. Jackie O's was more conservative and classic, for sure, but still, she was known for being very fashion conscious, something that First Ladies were not known for at the time. She was a Chanel type of gal. But also modern (polo pants, sleeveless gowns, somewhat garish jewelry). Her fashion was also interesting. She didn't just wear a suit; it was a certain kind of suit with a certain kind of fit, with different kinds of jewelry...it had panache. (as opposed to Nancy Reagan, who dressed impeccably and classicly...but that's it...no surprises, nothing different, nothing modern, no panache. Clearly, Nancy cared about how she looked but was not into fashion.)

I can see the similarity between the Michelle and Jackie, though. They are both on the youngish side, for First Ladies, and they are both "modern" for their era, and they are both very interested in fashion and wear interesting clothes or classic clothes with an interesting take on them, or something different/surprising with an outfit.

I'm not shaped like Michelle, so I wouldn't wear some of the things she wears. She's pear shaped. I would wear slimmer skirts to hug the hips, with structured jackets or looser tops. Hey, that sounds like Jackie O's style!

36. I am shaped like her.
Only nowhere near as tall, and with a bit more up top. There's no way I'd even own a belt that wide. I wouldn't wear a lot of what Michelle wears, but it's just not my style. But, her formal gowns have all been gorgeous. And, I do like this $35 job. Wish she'd stick with a thinner belt. On the other hand, at least she doesn't have a waist bow on everything, like her predecessor did. Ugh.

31. black is a neutral, the red belt is a primary color....
Edited on Fri Feb-11-11 01:52 AM by Clio the Leo
.... the yellow shoes also a primary color. All the colors work together. Black shoes would have been a bit too clunky looking (even on legs that long) and red shoes would have been ... egads no! ... matchy matchy is a bit too Pat Nixon.

It's cute (which is all that really matters in life, right?) :)

Now, let's talk about these flip flops child, if they're the rubber ones from Old Navy, we're gonna have to talk! Dont be out there dressin' like a teabagger! ;)

26. I love this idea of schools pushing healthy eating.... I would love
it even more if it was funded.... Eating well is sometimes pricey... Schools should receive better budgets to bring in better nutrition.... and supplement via snacks that do not have to come out of family budgets.... A lot of families sending kids to school are out of work. This would be so amazing to bring fresh fruit and vegetables....
