At the Alfalfa Club, she apparently asked a uniformed official for another glass of wine. I don't see the big deal, frankly. She could have been knee-deep in a very thoughtful discussion with another person, and barely saw the uniform as it went by. Anyone?

20. "Could you say 'senator' instead of 'ma'am?"
All part and parcel of a general lack of respect and knowledge of the U.S. military by pols on both wings, who make the decisions that get us killed.

Color me... unsuprised, but still deeply offended.

23. Right wing talking point and an old one at that. Senator Boxer was ok asking to be called
senator instead of ma'am. Senator Boxer spoke with the officer afterward and he was ok with it. As a former female Army officer myself, officers are briefed on how to speak to Senators when there appear before them and if the Senator wishes to be called Senator that is known before hand.

24. Dress uniforms for service members are rather "waiterish". Perhaps
time to change the dress uniform for generals and others. Contest time?

3. Did you hear about it on Fox News?
Telling us where you heard it might help us verify the veracity of the story.

That said, I agree that it's no big deal even if true.

5. I don't know if it was on Fox News or not. As far as I can tell, the story originated from the
right wing web site, the Daily Caller, which cited an anonymous tipster.

Isn't it the job of the military to "protect and serve"?

It's gotta be a step up from killing people.

Edited on Thu Feb-03-11 11:16 PM by slackmaster
It doesn't really matter whether it actually happened or not. A formal uniform for a senior Army officer would look pretty bizarre to an unbiased observer from another planet.

It's even funnier how many people don't comprehend that.

18. But how would it have been taken
if Gen Chiarelli, not wearing his glasses and saw a woman in a black dress passing behind him, asked Ms. Jarrett for a glass of wine, please?

According to ABC News, the General thought it was funny. Ms. Jarrett offered to buy him a drink, and they have a date in March.

28. Here you go:
Four-star Army Gen. Peter Chiarelli -- the number two general in the U.S. army -- "says he is absolutely not offended that Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett mistook him for a waiter at a fancy Washington dinner this week and asked him for a glass of wine," CNN reports.

Said Chiarelli in an email: "It was an honest mistake that ANYONE could have made. She was sitting, I was standing and walking behind her and all she saw were the two stripes on my pants which were almost identical to the waiters pants -- REALLY. She apologized and will come to the house for dinner if a date can be worked out in March."

Anyone making a big deal out of this after hearing what the General says is kind of an idiot.

This is the General
