Obama's address watched on TV by 43 million

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Almost 43 million Americans tuned in to watch President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech live on television, according to TV ratings provider Nielsen.

In a 61-minute address on Tuesday evening that was carried live on 11 U.S. and Spanish-language television stations, Obama stressed the need to freeze spending and find common ground with Republicans to boost growth and create jobs.

Nielsen said on Wednesday that 42.8 million viewers watched the speech live -- an 11 percent drop from Obama's TV audience for his 2010 State of the Union address, which drew 48 million people.

The U.S. president's emotionally charged speech this month at a memorial to victims of the deadly shooting rampage in Arizona commanded an audience of 31 million across seven U.S. networks.

Overall 4.96 million people watched the State of the Union on FOX

2.5 million for MSNBC

2.98 million on CNN



What's interesting is that MSNBC nearly tied CNN for SOTU viewers. In the past when there was a big news event CNN dominated. That is no longer true. In standard broadcasts, MSNBC now beats CNN in total primetime viewers and casual viewers throughout the day. Also note that even on a big news night like this where casual people will tune in to CNN in large numbers, the Chris Matthews SHow and Lawrence O"Donnell's show both beat CNN in pre-game coverage. And once the SOTU was over, by 12pm, again MSNBC had more viewers.

43 Million really doesn't seem like a lot.

5. They have no way of knowing how many people were watching in any one home.....

Whether there were one person in front of the television or maybe three....they can only guess. They also can't count how many attended watch parties, or how many saw it on the internet.
