Cheney: In Need of Heart Transplant?

The former vice president underwent the procedure last July after it became clear, he said at the time, that he was "entering a new phase of the disease" when he began to "experience increasing congestive heart failure."

"After a series of recent tests and discussions with my doctors, I decided to take advantage of one of the new technologies available and have a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implanted," Cheney said in his statement then.

The LVAD is implanted next to the heart to help its main pumping chamber, the left ventricle, pump blood through the body. Such devices are used mainly for short periods, to buy potential transplant candidates time as they await a donor organ.

Cardiologists said that in Cheney's case, the pump is likely a "bridge" that will keep him alive until he can receive a heart transplant. Many cardiac experts said at the time of his surgery that Cheney may be only one step away from a transplant but could find himself on a wait list for "months or years."

So I guess in a sense dick Cheney will be killing at least one more person before he kicks off. Oh man you know the media will be swooning over him when he finally keels over. He'll be remember as a hero or a saint by all the news outlets. I'm dreading the day that happens with Margaret Thatcher over here.

And just in case no one here as already said it; this series of procedures and medical devices would not be made avialable to the rest of us....Cheney is using his pilfered money to stay on a couple more years.

already had a heart transplant. I had a friend who had one, before the transplant he was a terrible color and exhausted all the time. After, his color returned to normal and he looked very healthy, Dick had the same color when he became VP, years ago then his color suddenly changed and for quite a while he looked healthier. :shrug: So yeah, I think I would bet the farm.

(Season 1, Episode 6) ... Wikipedia summary follows (slightly revised for obvious reasons):

Dick Cheney's heart fails again and he sees himself moving down a tunnel of light. His personal physician, Dr. Victor Frankenstein rushes to the scene and resuscitates him just in time. A mysterious blue energy appears near Cheney's body and moves into the electrical systems of the room. Although Cheney is still alive, his heart is badly damaged — and the artificial heart being developed by Dr. Frankenstein will not be ready in time. Cheney threatens to pull funding from the artificial heart project unless he is moved to the front of the queue for the next available donor heart.

This puts Dr. Frankenstein in a difficult moral situation. Losing funding for the artificial heart project could mean the loss of a system that could save thousands of lives. To keep the funding he must give priority to a ruthless, cold elderly man who has already had a full life. The situation is even more difficult because Francisco Feliz and Mark Price, both need transplants (but neither have health care coverage thanks to Arizona governor Jan Brewer). Neither will survive beyond a couple of weeks.

The blue energy release during Cheney's last resuscitation tries to kill Cheney. Dr. Frankenstein realises that keeping Cheney alive beyond his time has serious consequences and refuses Cheney's request to be given priority.

All of the prospective transplant patients die. Cheney sees Francisco and Mark inside the tunnel of light, and realises that their future paths are very different. Francisco and Mark comment that it is so warm and loving. They goe to Heaven while Cheney (and eventually Jan Brewer) descend into the depths of Hell.

38. My dad has congestive heart failure and he jokingly told

his cardiologist that he didn't want "one of those machines that Cheney got." His doctor said that wouldn't be a problem because the only reason he has it is because he IS Cheney. He said no other patients have an LVAD implanted and get to walk around outside a hospital, they're still only used as a temporary thing for people waiting to get a transplant - people in cardiac intensive care.
