Poll question: How many more promises will President Obama break before the end of his first term?
Tax cuts for middle class? Payroll tax ending in a year? Another extension of his tax cuts for the rich? Bringing the troops home from Afganistan?

1. denial ain't just a river
Look, I'm as happy as can be to have a President who doesn't act like he was appointed to be King.

On the other hand, as TR and FDR and HST showed, the best Presidents are those who LEAD, not those who make a career of acquiescence. It is one thing not to be ABLE to fulfill your campaign promises (anyone remember "watch my lips: no new taxes"?) but to dance away from them as thoroughly and deliberately as this President is doing/has done is a disgrace.

In case you're wondering what I mean, refer to the OP.

Public option? Close Gitmo? Repeal DADT? Stop the Bush tax fraud? etc., etc. etc.

Wake up.

3. Actually, his leadership was just demonstrated
When Congress fell down on the job, he stepped in, negotiated the best deal he could get out of Congress and they passed it.

On the upside, the President's tax cut deal provides 13 months of unemployment insurance benefits, extends middle-class tax cuts, delivers targeted tax incentives for increased business spending including in the energy sector, and adds on top of that $120 billion in temporary tax cuts that are sure to have a stimulative effect.

6. The best deal for the Republicans.
When the fuck have tax cuts ever been "sure to have a stimulative effect"?

This country is fucked.

9. "When the fuck have tax cuts ever been 'sure to have a stimulative effect'?"
When they are middle-class tax cuts and a payroll tax cut, and when the deal includes one of the most stimulative programs: unemployment benefits.

12. Middle class tax cuts and unemployment benefits are an extension of current benefits.
Edited on Fri Dec-17-10 10:03 AM by Dawgs
Neither have been stimulative.

The payroll tax cut is something the Republicans wanted and it will only hurt SS. I'd rather keep Social Security than lose it for some minor short-term gain.

I am sure you will find some excuse to defend Obama's tax policies.

7. Actually, this was just the final straw.
Giving in to the insurance companies and dropping the public option was the beginning.

14. This is funny because just a couple months ago you were lambasting critics here...
saying "he's not a king". Now you've whiplashed all the way over to the "Obamer's a big fat liar" extreme. Cute.

What I was arguing a few months back was irrelevant to this "compromise".

His failed miserably on the big important ones.

Not easy? Please show me one example of when Obama has gotten something passed that was a tough sell.

24. I get a kick out of the breathlessness of it.
I was hoping that one of the choices would be a kid number, like "a Gazzilliom-million-thousand" (That would have been funnier)

But sadly ... same stuff different day ...

That's is it!! I am done with Obama!!! I really am this time!! That's the last straw!! I mean it!!

I walked in 5 foot snow knocking on doors in 2008, but now I won't vote for him!!! never ever!! And I'm not donating to him either!!!

And if you agree with anything he's done, you are not a real liberal, you are a doody head!!

Deep breath ... holding it, holding it, holding it.

:grr:

17. It doesn't really matter anymore
We know what we got with Obama so we have to think mid to long term and just learn to swallow his policies for the next 6 years. For now I am going to make sure we win the presidential election in 2012 (even seeing Obama as a huge disappointment) because controlling the Supreme Court is crucial.

But since I don't think he's going to have time to break many more of them, I think one might be it.

40. Huh?
WHAT numbers?

A poll taken among DU members, a significant number of whom have spent recent days calling the President "weak", an "appeaser" and a "capitulator" ad nauseum, SHOCKINGLY reveals a lot of posters still feel the same way they did the last time they expressed their disgust about 15 minutes ago on another thread.

This place is taking itself far too seriously.
