There was no motion on the floor. Nothing was delayed, for so much as a minute.

He was simply exercising his Senatorial prerogative to speak on whatever he felt like, absent any other business before the house.

It was impressive, yes, and needed to be done, and needs to be done from time to time.

But it wasn't a filibuster. (Sanders campaign contributor since '90, and fellow DSA member.)

4. Actually, not a real filibuster at all...

Sanders was on the floor talking a lot, but he was not holding up legislation and had no effect whatsoever on the tax cut "deal" which wasn't even on the floor yet.

I think this was all part of the theater. Reid needed to give time to those who wanted to vent. Sanders will not have the votes necessary to lead a real filibuster when it is time for a cloture vote on the Obama tax cut "deal" with Republicans.

I think some were calling it a filibuster hoping to draw attention to what Sanders was doing, but it wasn't a real filibuster at all.
