Obama Caves on Tax Cut for Rich, will the betrayal ever end???

Monday DAYBOOK: Obama Caves on Tax Cut for Rich

NYT reports Obama deal with GOP near -- they get Bush tax cuts for rich, he gets jobless help.

Joe Scarborough tweets: "Politically, I am stunned the President is extending the tax cuts to millionaires."

Paul Krugman column: Let's NOT Make a Deal. Let taxes rise for all, if necessary, rather than give in to "blackmail."

I am stunned. I thought the betrayal from our center-right Republican President would have some limit. I've been proven wrong.

The question isn't whether he's doing it, but for how long.

I predicted when they passed 10 years ago, that they'd be renewed. Nobody would have the balls to let them expire.

Sure enough. Extend them again, and again, and again, ad infinitim nauseum :puke: :puke: :puke:

3. Unemployment Benefits.
Listening to the Bill Press radio show this morning and his interview with John Nichols only re-enforces that this compromise is no compromise.

Nichols points out that unemployment benefits would have to be extended even by Repuglicans ... they have unemployed constituents, too.

So, Obama tying the tax cuts for the rich to the unemployment issue is unnecessary.

And today I hear that Obama is going to North Carolina to again try and convince us that he really, truly doesn't want to extend the tax cuts for the rich ... I hate it when he says things that we all know he doesn't believe anymore.

Even with the betrayal on the public option, I don't think I have been as demoralized about Obama as I am on this tax cut issue ... it was such a central part of his campaign promises in 2008.

5. I have mixed feelings. I think the unemployed folks, who my husband
will be joining this week, may think food on the table is worth the compromise.
So ones feelings about this might hinge on their own circumstances.
Sometimes giving into "blackmail" might be for the greater good.
I don't know...

13. That shouldn't even be PART of a compromise.
That's the thing. Providing for those with nothing is what government is all about. Calling that an "option" is what gets us into these situations.

16. Not at all. I posted a prediction that he would in another thread
It is in his nature to stab in the back those who worked the hardest to get him elected. If I were Obama I wouldn't expect to be re-elected. He has pissed off so many of his (the Democrats') long time supporters he doesn't stand a chance of willing a 2nd term. I will guarantee you that if Obama is on the ticket, a Republican will be in the white house after the 2012 election.

I'm just waiting for the 2012 primaries.

I wouldn't betray the unemployed over a desire to make the rich pay more taxes. He may have been part of the orchestration of this 'caving in' but he's doing the only thing left to do. The important thing here is that the unemployed will continue to get help. It's not fair, but then, what is lately.

The last stage of grief is to accept the situation as it is and stop fighting it. It is what it is.

12. Existence is fair.
How many people that when stealing see the prison sentence, how many people when cheating see the pain in a wife's eyes, how many when lying see the future loss of trust.

Most of those that do not see life as fair, do things without knowing the fair conditions that will happen later. If you think life is not fair, it might be because you do not see the future consequences.

An education issue.

I understand now why Roslyn Education Secretary was President in the BSG show. It really is about Education.

33. It actually makes complete sense.
It is possible some can not see it, or someone is scrambling it. That is the only way it would not make sense to you.

Or it could be wave surfing, taking the peaks and assembling them into what they cumulatively say.

You said things are not fair. I was only commenting on you saying things are not fair, function not data.

I said they are, just some do not see the fairness that will occur.

So if you think life is not fair, you may not be aware that some fairness will occur at some time.

So person steals, person goes to prison.

When he steals, he does not think of the prison that will occur.

Someone lives life a certain way, and does not think of the consequences that could happen after life.

The thing that does not make it make sense in that way, is grace and love, and the hope that all people will find comfort and a way out of some of the consequences they make for themselves. And in that it is beyond understanding. The paradox of concepts of grace, mercy, and justice.

Some use grace as a blank check to avoid justice and do what ever they want, that does not make sense, however not having grace also does not make sense since all fall short.

Beyond understanding, but being able to see the paradox, you can see where much sadness of the crying angels comes from, since they don't want people to suffer, and do help, but if someone took that for granted and did not learn or help also, that grace would be taken for granted and not used to help people. And that sadness is taking some of the hurt caused by others actions, to try and get them back on their feet, and many do, some don't, so it might just be a matter of perseverance and over time making things better.

18. No I do not have a job
Thank you for prying into my personal life. Are you fully employed? What is your annual salary? What is the total value of all assets you own?

The idea that Obama HAD to give away a 55-gallon drum of tax cuts to the rich in order to get a handful for the unemployed is just plain wrong. You're too used to seeing an American President go down on his knees for the Repukes. That is not the way a Democratic President should be behaving. If he had any competence, or any good speech writers or good advisors, Obama would be pounding away at the Pukes and having congress critters on the carpet day in and day out until the unemployment benefits got pushed through. Instead you think he's showing leadership by giving away the store in return for a can of Pepsi. Not a good deal.

32. Actually the fact is that's not the way Congress should be acting
And your cynical approach to letting people lose everything without help is why I figured you had a job. The fact that you don't only illustrates that you are a defeatist willing to be a sacrificial lamb so the rich won't get tax cuts. Frankly I find that sad.

From what he has done so far as President, I can tell you most assuredly he does not.

Capitulator in Chief. Unilateral disarmament is his motto. Cave, cave, cave, cave, cave, and then cave some more is his mantra.

Yeah, what you said is exactly what Obama SHOULD be doing! I wholeheartedly agree with you. I just don't see it happening from this President.

26. They weren't "executive orders" - they were "signing statements"
And they can't be used in this fashion. They were essentially claims that a part of the law the President is signing is unconstitutional and he would therefore not enforse those parts.

It can't really be argued that the upper-end tax cuts are unconstitutional. Bad policy, sure... but not unconstitutional.

about what they want and their wittle feelings instead of the truth and the process in which things are really done. We all want someone who can go in there and poof make shit happen, but its not how our legislative process is set up. It was already jimmy-rigged to stall!!! In order for good legislation to pass for the people we must remove the jimmy-riggers then their ridiculous laws and present our President with legislation that can be signed!!!!

28. I agree with Krugman
The middle class can "make do" with less money in their pockets... they are used to surviving with less! And the poorer working people, those with kids earning less than $40K/year hardly noticed the $500/yr tax cut they received ($10/week).

I will do with less if we stop giving the top earners a tax savings equal or higher than most Americans' salaries!
