U.S. House Democrats retain Pelosi as leader

Nov 17 (Reuters) - Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to retain Speaker Nancy Pelosi as their leader when Republicans take control of the chamber in January.

Rejecting complaints that Pelosi was to blame for Democrats losing the House in the November 2 elections, they chose Pelosi as their incoming minority leader. Pelosi has served as House Speaker, the chamber's presiding officer, since 2007. She is the first woman to hold the job. In the race for minority leader Pelosi won 150-43, defeating her only challenger, moderate Heath Shuler.

Edited to add this via Greg Sargent:

* History lesson of the day: With Dems huddling behind closed doors and emotionally debating their losses, Dem Rep. Rob Andrews reminds folks that Nancy Pelosi engineered the Dem return from the wilderness in 2006 and 2008:

"She took over a caucus that had lost five consecutive elections, and at a time when people thought we'd never win again, she brought us to two victories."

<...>

Edited: Screw Heath. :)

3. It is ridiculous to think that Pelosi were the blame for the loss of the house

If the remaining blue dogs who opposed her had any sense they would see that the members who lost were mostly conservative dems who voted as republicans. I guess voters in their districts figured out if they are going to have dems voting with the republicans they might as well put the actual deal in their place.

8. This is very good.
Regardless of what was or wasn't on the table at various times. she is an incredibly effective politician, which is why Rush, Beck & co. hated her so.
