CBS News Poll: 72% of Americans Want GOP, Dems to Compromise
Poll: Americans Want GOP, Dems to Compromise
Posted by CBSNews.com

The 2010 midterm elections marked a historic loss for President Obama's Democratic party, and although the Republicans now control the House of Representatives, the public wants them to work with the president and compromise in order to get things done.

Americans' desire to see Republicans and Democrats put the bickering aside and get some work done extends across both parties, with a substantial 72 percent of those polled by CBS News saying the GOP members of Congress should make trade offs in order to get things accomplished.

Only 21 percent of those surveyed (and only 32 percent of Republicans) said Republican lawmakers should stick to their positions, even if it means not getting as much done.

Even most Tea Party supporters -- who overwhelmingly backed Republican House candidates -- said compromise should be the primary focus of Congress. Thirty-eight percent of those expressing support for the conservative grassroots movement said Republicans should stick to their guns, however.

2. Except the public will only punish the dems
Just like the last election. What is different now? The repubs haven't worked with the dems once over the past 2 years. And all it got them was huge gains.

Dems play by queens rules, the Rs play with absolutely NO rules ... They break them all, don't compromise in any possible way, the dems cave consistently, the Rs just scream more, and the liberal media and mushy middle condeme all for not compromising ...

3. Trouble is republicans' concept of "compromise" is democratic capitulation to their policies.

5. I'm sorry, how is it a 'historic' loss?
The Democrats retained the Senate and it's not even the most seats that the Democrats have ever lost. In 1938, (when progressive hero Franklin Roosevelt was president) the Dems lost 72 seats.

It's a bad loss, but it is a stretch to call it 'historic'.

6. More like a historic lack of total victory
No party has ever made even comparable mid-term gains in the House without taking the Senate as well.

21. That's about the size of it when it comes to the M$M
Everything is unprecedented, too, and skyrocketing or plummeting applies to the least change in any measure.

CBS helping Republicans once again....This poll should have been taken after the new congress is seated...The only chance we have at getting anything passed will be to force it through durring the Lame Duck Session....

8. I don't. The GOP doesn't care about compromise. They crave power.
They demonstrated that they will gain such potency by any means necessary. Now does that sound like a compromsing bunch to you?

9. And, failing that, I'll bet their 2nd choice is for Dems to fight for them ...
... if the GOP will compromise great!

If they won't I hope plan B isn't caving to them but it's really looking like it is.

15. Where the hell were those Americans when Obama and the Democrats
were compromising the last two years? Most voters are clueless about the legislative process and the media does not care about doing their job.

it clear there would be NO COMPROMISING! The made it clear by their actions over the past two years and their exact words over the past few weeks.
