Krugman: Harry Reid won by not apologizing

Krugman (http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/03/harry-gave-em-hell/):

Harry Gave ‘Em Hell

Aha. I almost forgot to mention this, but one of the surprises of last night is that Harry Reid, supposedly a completely hopeless case, is still Senator.

How did that happen? Reid did something Democrats almost never do: instead of apologizing for his party, he ran against a person with a habit of making crazy statements by hitting hard, again and again, with ads calling her a crazy person. It was very rude and uncivil. And it worked.

1. Wait
is this the same Paul Krugman who takes every opportunity to write that Obama is too focused on bipartisanship?

Harry Reid 2012!

2. The media representation of her, and the things she said she thinks are important helped him also.
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 11:08 PM by RandomThoughts
Not sure if the media told the truth or not, but the concepts from the right on topics are a bit mixed up.

There are a few concepts that match many sects of many religions that justify hardship and extream wealth, those concepts don't work very well in society.

Then there was the headless bodies in the desert :)

3. Reid won because he had a better ground game and 90% of the Hispanic vote
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 11:05 PM by Azathoth
A lot of Democrats, including, for instance, Jack Conway, ran hard attack ads as well. They didn't work.

17. Rep. Virginia Foxx of NC.
She's the right-wing nutbag that said last year that Matthew Shepard's murder for being gay was a "hoax", that it wasn't a hate crime, and that he was instead killed during the commitment of a robbery.

9.  I've heard Nevadans on TPM say he was more than a
little responsible for taking out the mainstream Republican candidate and making sure he got the nutty teabagger as an opponent. Remember the bit about chickens as payment for illness instead of HCR?

13. Sorry. Harry carried the county that elected Ms. Nutjob to the State Legislator by 5%.
It was shocking. Angle has always been wildly popular in Washoe county and her views have been well known there for a long time. If it was just that his opponent was a nutjob, she'd have, at least, blown him out of the water, there.

Looks like he had the cojones to be rude and uncivil to the nutjob!

12. they say that because he isn't loud or screaming
but he did stick by the very unpopular health care bill and anything else the Democrats have done. he had Democrats campaign for him and didn't try to distance himself from the party.

Any Republican who wasn't a total nutter probably would have won.

14. Nevada has no problem with nutjobs.
Harry carried the county that elected Angle to the State Legislature by 5%.

Attempting to minimize the importance of his victory doesn't fly with me.

18. He won by 6 percent...a stronger candidate would've still had a challenge
6 points is a lot.

besides, how much more of the Democratic vote in Las Vegas and Reno was any Republican going to get?

most of the votes in Nevada come from urban areas.

15. It was the ground game
I don't know what kind of ground game others had in their state but here in Nevada the ground game was spot on.The unions where impressive, providing buses and lunch to working people to go and vote at the polls. Robocall reminders. Door to door canvassing making sure registered folks did go out and vote. It also helped that she is bat-shit crazy and even some re pukes voted for Harry believe that or not. I know 10 re pukes in my husbands family did because she was too bat-shit even for them. In the debate he seemed weak but he came out smelling like a rose to those in the middle swing voters who's political whims swing like a pendulum. I heard it while canvassing.

Lots of miserable looking faces among the RWers up here in the northern part of the state, today and I enjoyed every one of them :)

Oh, and Mr. Nate 78% chance of Angle winning Silver can bite me!

23. Harry Reid won by having an opponent who was insane
Edited on Thu Nov-04-10 06:10 PM by Yeshuah Ben Joseph
It would have been the same no matter who won the Repuke primary, though Angle actually made you MISS the Chicken Lady.

He certainly didn't deserve to win, aside from the competition being worse. He definitely has NOT earned another term as Senate Majority Leader. Now more than ever, we need someone in that role with a spine. Harry ain't it.
