2. Voted first thing in the morning at my Madison, WI polling place
7AM--about a dozen people ahead of me--and as I was standing in line about 7 or 8 people arrived. I'm assuming given where I live and district that most probably were voting Democratic. Weather in WI today is fall like but clear and highs in 50's overall--no excuses not to vote due to weather.

32. Cool - In 2008, one of my daughters, who was then in college , had a friend take
a photos of her and her filling out the Obama oval on her mail in ballot, a close up of her ballot, then a photo of her mailing it.

She was in college in MA and figured that Lautenberg was more likely to need help than Kerry would. (Her congressman in MA, McGovern had no opponent) (If it were this year, she likely would have registered in MA)

4. Allentown, PA: "Voter turnout running higher than expected"
Voter turnout is reportedly higher than normal, shocking polls workers across the Lehigh Valley area who were not expecting much interest in races for key positions like senator in Washington, D.C., and governor in Harrisburg.

In Allentown's mostly Democratic 7th Ward, Gus Kruz, the judge of elections, was seeing high interest in voting already a few minutes after polls opened at 7 a.m. Although not a large district, a dozen people had already voted in the 7th Ward by 7:15 a.m. At that point, Kruz couldn't predict if more Democrats would come out than Republicans.

The same was true in Bethlehem's 15th ward, 2nd district at the Education Center on Sycamore St. There' Craig Hynes, judge of elections, said he's seen crisp turnout. By 7:45 a.m., 66 voters had cast ballots despite mechanical problems with two of three machines, including one that had to be placed prior to the polls opening.

"For a nonpresidential election we are running above normal for this time of day," Hynes said.

Bob Cohen, 71, of Bethlehem agreed after casting his ballot at the Education Center. He's Democratic poll watcher who said he hopes President Obama's recent swings across the country will energize his party to prevent a Republican sweep.

"I just think in the last few weeks the people who voted for Obama in '08 are realizing this is a referendum about Obama,"
Cohen said. "I think Democrats are not going to do as badly as predicted."

About a third of the voters when I voted were A-A, along with at least a couple of under-30 voters, both white and black. I was pleasantly surprised by that.

The poll workers were commenting on how busy they were. I was #105 at around 11:30. I suspect it's going to get really busy after about 4:00.

9. Minor incident in Surry County, NC
There was a runnoff election in the Demcratic primary earlier this year, so new poll books were printed with just registered Democrats (since republicans can't vote in our primaries here).

Whoever set up the general election print job forgot to change some setting, so the poll books this morning still didn't list any republicans. It was still possible to vote if they could call in to the county to verify the voter... or cast a provisional ballot... but you can imagine how things got backed up and some people couldn't vote.

New books were printed and on their way out as of about 7:45, so the issue should be fixed now.

No dirty pool involved, just human error. Probably wouldn't help much even if it were intentional... our NC House candidate there was arrested twice this weekend for DWI.

It is amazing that he/she felt no sense of responsibility for the honor of being a nominee. Even one DUI would have been incredibly irresponsible even if he were not a candidate - and doubly so as a candidate.

20. I heard Perry was up 8 pts so I had to go vote after all -
Bill White (whom I've met) is a decent guy for a capitalist, and sure as hell smarter than Perry. He was an excellent mayor in Houston and he deserves a shot.

I live in Brazoria county - home of Ron Paul. Used to be solid red, but with Obama's election in 2008 we got out the vote (focusing especially on the minority areas) and came very close. The local dems are focused on turning Brazoria blue and have been building a local infrastructure. Texas has so much labor (unions down here with the refineries) and the dems challenge is how to reach them.

21.  Voter turnout reports mixed across Indiana
(could this be good news? If it's Indianapolis city it might be good for dems and they are saying turnout is heavy while in Muncie and LaFayette it's "typical" or "small", not sure if they are more GOP areas or not?)

INDIANAPOLIS — Early reports of voter turnout across Indiana appear to be mixed.

Election officials at two polling places on Indianapolis' near-northside told The Associated Press the turnout Tuesday morning was heavy for a mid-term vote, though not as heavy as 2008. But The Indianapolis Star reports that its check of a handful of precincts around the city found turnout was light.

The Star Press reports that turnout in Muncie seemed typical for a non-presidential election, with no lines of people waiting in line when polls opened.

The Journal & Courier reports that early voting lines in Lafayette were small, with many locations saying there was no wait to vote.

24. Early Voting in Polk County (including Des Moines, IA) heavily favor Dems
About 110 Polk County election workers counted over 44,000 early ballots that were cast ahead of tomorrow’s election.

The early ballot count reached 44,457, Polk County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Jamie Fitzgerald reported this afternoon. That’s the third largest in Polk County history and a new record for early voting in non-Presidential election years.

Absentee ballots are sorted and counted Monday morning at the Polk County offices on Euclid Avenue in Des Moines. (John Gaps III/The Register)

Democrats had the strongest presence among early voters, with a total of 22,784 ballots cast. Republicans had 15,230; there were 6,417 ballots cast by independent voters and 26 from other parties.

Election workers began counting early ballots today at River Place, 2309 Euclid Ave., at about 8 a.m. This year marks the first time votes can be counted on the day before the election, and Polk County is among about 12 Iowa counties that will do so. The votes will be totaled on Tuesday.

“People won’t need to camp outside my house tonight because I won’t know anything before tomorrow,” Fitzgerald joked.

Democrats had a strong showing in Polk County District 3, where incumbent Supervisor Tom Hockensmith is trying to fend off a challenge from Runnells Republican Dave Funk.

30. Iowa--Quad Cities voters hit polls early
More Scott County voters than expected turned up at voting places early today, causing at least one election official to quickly add more spots to vote at a location in Eldridge, Iowa.

A steady stream of voters at North Scott High School in Eldridge caused the election judge to quickly arrange two voting stations to the four that had been set up very early in the morning.

Jeff Dickinson, Eldridge, was the first person in line.

“I’m 57 and I’ve never missed an election. My dad always said to me, ‘if you don’t vote, then don’t complain,’ ” he said.

Dickinson added that he was very tired of the negative political advertising he’s heard during the election, “like everyone else is.”

A second busy precinct was located at Williams Intermediate School, Davenport. Fifteen people were lined up outside the door at 7 a.m., according to Bev Strayhall, an election official.

Voters at this precinct included Tammie Clark and her daughter, Bronisha Clark, Davenport. “We know that we needed to get out here and vote. Your vote counts,” Tammie Clark said.

It was a first-time voting experience for Bronisha Clark, a 19-year-old Scott Community College student.

26. Morning voter turnout strong across Western Massachusetts
Predictions of heavy voter turnout appeared to be accurate as Western Massachusetts residents flocked to the polls.

The parking lot of Wilbraham Middle School was overflowing as townspeople cast ballots in regional, state and national races. Many voters carried voter guides supplied by the state or The Republican to make better sense of the three statewide ballot questions.

Several voters remarked it was the largest turnout they had seen in years.

Some 2,000 ballots had been cast by 11 a.m. Polls had opened at 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m.

Longmeadow, more than 80 voters – some texting messages while others took short breaks from their morning jogs and walks – formed a line in the cold outside the Community House yesterday morning waiting for the polls to open at 7 a.m.

A police officer opened the doors promptly at 7, and voters streamed into the Community House where they were greeted by poll workers.

A steady stream of Longmeadow voters entered and exited the Community House by late morning.

Outside, Democratic Town Committee member Candy Glazer was hard at work setting up a signs at the committee’s booth. Glazer said that the committee would be working at the booth all day.

Campaign workers for state Rep. Brian Ashe, including his wife Sonia, were also among the early birds setting up a booth for their candidate.

Easthampton City Clerk Barbara LaBombard said that about 200 people from each of the city’s five precincts, for about a total of about 1,000 of the city’s 11,440 registered voters had already voted by 9:30 a.m.

“It’s decent,” LaBombard said. “It seems steady.”

27. MA Voting II--Voting is brisk on the South Shore
Vera Doucot arrived at the polls early Tuesday to cast her ballot. She’s had a lot of practice. She was born in 1909, when Ebenzer Sumner Draper was governor of Massachusetts and William Howard Taft was in the White House.

This time around, the 101-year-old Carver resident was choosing from among four candidates for governor, two of whom live on the South Shore, and helping to decide several other close races, including in the 10th Congressional District.

She was among the crowds of voters who flocked to the polls within the first few hours of voting Tuesday morning.

“Turnout is brisk, it’s heavy, we’re having a great day,” Quincy city clerk Joseph Shea said about three hours after the polls opened.

He predicted the percentage of registered voters in the city who would cast their vote Tuesday would reach 58 to 60. “That’s not presidential heavy – about 70 percent turnout – but it’s good,” he said.

Gov. Deval Patrick also cast his vote early in the day, not long after the polls opened at St. Mary of the Hills School in Milton

31. WI--Voter turnout at polls steady this morning in city of Oshkosh
Voter turnout is steady this morning at polling places in the city of Oshkosh.

Two-hundred seventy-seven people had voted as of 8:30 a.m. at district 15 located at Carl Traeger Middle School on the city’s west side.

“There had close to 50 people waiting outside to vote when we opened,” said John Hinz, district 15 polling chairman. “For the first hour and a half today we were very steady.”

Barb Ames said no particular issue or candidate brought her out to vote this morning at Carl Traeger.

“I always vote. I think it''s our duty,” she said. “Ever since I turned 18 I’ve voted. If you don’t vote you have no right to complain.”

The first hour of voting this morning saw 116 people go to the polls at district 9 at Webster Stanley Elementary School on the city’s east side.

Suzette Lizotte, district 9 polling chairman, said they have seen a steady flow of voters so far this morning.

“I think there will be a good turnout today,” Lizotte said. “ District 9 has strong voters. They come to vote.”

George Bongert, who voted just past 8 a.m. at Webster Stanley elementary, said what brought him to the polls is he’s “sick and tired” of what is going on in Washington D.C.

“It’s high time our government learns to live within its means just like the rest of us do. In other words, if you can’t afford it don’t buy it,” he said.

A total of 50 people had voted as of 9:30 a.m. at district 7 located at Albee Hall on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Kathy Kubasta, district 7 polling chairman, said voter registrations have been going strong since the polls opened this morning.

“It’s great. We are always glad to see the students come out,” she said.

45. Upstate NY report:
In the four-year cycle, the highest turnout is always in the presidential year," Republican Election Commissioner David Gamache said. "This year is the gubernatorial year, and that is always the second-highest turnout in the … cycle."

Voters today are selecting the next governor, attorney general, comptroller, two U.S. senators and members of the House of Representatives and state Legislature, as well as other local positions.

“We've never been this steady,” election inspector Diane Pulcher, who was working at the Elant Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Facility in Fishkill, said of voter turnout. "This is better than in years past."

In Beacon, at the Forrestal Elementary School polling site, there were 116 votes cast by 10:30 a.m.

Voter Moe Baxter said he voted for John Hall, "because he sticks up for the veterans. I don't agree with everything he does, but he backs up the vets."

Baxter also voted for Chuck Schumer, whom he said is "the same way, he sticks his neck out for the veterans."

At the Millbrook Village Firehouse, 487 people had voted by 11:07 a.m. Two out of three voting machines stopped working because of a paper jam at around that time, but were reset within a few minutes.

50. Va-10 Reporting

Deader than dead, but mainly because I went at a slow time. Frank Wolf-R versus Fred Barnett-D with a Libertarian on the ballot.

District was solid Dem until you know when (1964), but we've shown the tendancy to move around...had a Dem in the US House in the late 1970s and voted for Obama 53-46. Frank Wolf has been in the house since the early 1980s, he's sorta of an icon.

Frank Wolf isn't part of the loonies out there and has been involved in some good things, although I voted for the Dem.

51. Overheard in my Apache Junction, AZ, polling place. 10:15 A.M.
Said by one of the poll workers: "I've been working this precinct since 1996. This is looking to be the biggest turnout we've had since the 2000 presidential election."

But I had no waiting, and quickly marked my PAPER ballot. Arizona has its political problems, but at least we do still have paper ballots.

53. WI--Milwaukee: Long Voting Lines
MILWAUKEE - Voting is underway as polls have opened Tuesday for people in Wisconsin to cast their ballots.

Voters have found long lines as the 2010 November elections will bring decisions in important state and federal government races.

Democratic incumbent Senator Russ Feingold tweeted that he voted Tuesday morning in Middleton. He'll wait for results in his race against Republican Ron Johnson.

The Government Accountability Board expects about 50% turnout across the state. In Milwaukee, Election Commission executive director Sue Edman says turnout could be even higher.

"At 50%, we'd see 152,000 (voters)," explained Edman on 620WTMJ's "Wisconsin's Morning News."

"We think we'll see a better turnout than that. Maybe 55%."

54. High Voter Turnout Across Massachusetts
Polling stations across the state are reporting a brisk turnout for today’s election.

In Boston, more than 28,000 people had cast ballots by 9 a.m., more than 7.5 percent of all registered voters. By noon, nearly 16 percent of registered voters in Boston had cast their ballots.

Several town clerks say turnout is higher than usual

56. Watching turnout in Boston
http://thephoenix.com/BLOGS/talkingpolitics/archive/2010/11/02/watching-turnout.aspx

nteresting fact: overall turnout numbers were almost exactly the same in the November 2006 statewide election (Deval Patrick) and the January 2010 special US Senate election (Scott Brown). In 2006, 2,243,835 people cast ballots in Massachusetts; in 2010, it was 2,249,026. Turnout percentage was lower, because far more people are registered to vote now, thanks in large part to the huge 2008 registration effort.

...

However, while the overall numbers were nearly the same, there was considerable variance within that. Put simply, some of the whiter, more conservative areas of Boston voted in higher numbers in 2010 -- 15% higher in South Boston's Ward 6 -- while the more heavily minority areas voted in much lower numbers -- 20% lower in Ward 14, which includes Grove Hall and Franklin Field.
Through noon, the official Boston election department data has 58,388 people voting so far in the city, which is a little ahead of the 55,309 who had voted by that point in January.

And so far at least, the numbers look like a return to the 2006 Patrick breakdown, rather than a repeat of the 2010 Brown breakdown. South Boston has cast fewer votes than at this point in the January election, while ward 14 is 41% higher. Roxbury precincts are also up significantly so far.

...

So, in Boston, the vote pattern is closer to the one in 2006 than 2009, which is good news.

they were shouting, holding signs, trying to block voting places. The reports have been confirmed by the Dept. of Elections, and when MSNBC tried to contact the O'Donnell campaign, they haven't heard back from them. Surprise, surprise! RWers trying to stop Dems. from voting.

Republicans are boasting an early vote advantage in Colorado's nail-biter Senate race.

But a small anecdote has Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet's campaign optimistic.

Colorado State University, located in Ft. Collins, ran out of ballots this morning, according to Bennet spokesman Trevor Kincaid. "More had to be delivered. Good sign," he e-mailed.

75. Great news. I voted south of Ft Collins...
in an area that's significantly Republican, and turnout didn't seem particularly high--no wait at around 10 this morning. Given the choice of paper or electronic, opted for paper and voted straight Dem.

Hoping that the high voter turnout at CSU bodes well, that Buck and Tancredo will be yesterday's news, and that 60,61,62,63 and 101 fall flat.

72. Stamford CT: "turnout steady"
STAMFORD -- As of 3 p.m. on Election Day, voter turnout in the city has been steady, according to the registrars of voters.

Alice Fortunato, Democratic registrar of voters, said 20,046 registered Stamford voters, or 34.94 percent, had gone to the polls as of 3 p.m.

"Compared to 2008, which was a bigger election year, these numbers are about average," Fortunato said. "It's not great, but it's been kind of steady. Maybe it will pick up as the day goes on and commuters vote on their way home."

Lucy Corelli, Republican registrar of voters, said the voting process in Stamford has gone smoothly so far.

"I don't know of any (machine) glitches," Corelli said. "So far, so good

74. AP article from MA hints to Patrick losing (comparison to Dukakis who lost after his first term)
I hope I am wrong, but I am more and more worried.
http://www.masslive.com/news/index.ssf/2010/11/2-year_gubernatorial_race_in_m.html

A nearly two-year Massachusetts gubernatorial race wrapped up Tuesday as candidates and the public alike voted in a race that could produce the first two-term Democratic governor since Michael S. Dukakis in 1986 – or a return to Republican leadership after a four-year hiatus.

Gov. Deval L. Patrick was trying to fend off a pro-GOP, anti-incumbent wave that threatened his colleagues in 37 races across the nation, while challenger Charles Baker sought to take advantage of that tide.
...
atrick’s election in 2006 broke a 16-year run of Republican governors pockmarked by the resignations of William F. Weld and Paul Cellucci, and the decision by former Gov. Mitt Romney to skip seeking a second term to run for president.

Dukakis served a term as governor in the 1970s but then lost re-election. Four years later, he won the first of two more terms, setting himself up for an unsuccessful bid for the presidency in 1988. He decided against running in 1990 and Weld succeeded him.
