I'm going to say it: I'm sick of hearing people support this administration's
anti-gay stance. I'm sick of hearing people defend this administration's phony attempts to fulfill its campaign promises, and I am heartily sick of hearing people be chastised for trying to remain truly progressive in an environment where even so-called liberals stand against them.

Ready to be tombstoned now. Whoever posted that bullshit about alienating our "allies" in the Obama administration has dealt the death blow to my interest in continuing to be a DUer.

She's a wonderful person with good ethics and strong character and she stands up for what she believes in. She's also right.

What is to feel sorry for?

17. Tombstoning means you are banned from posting on DU.
People who are banned have a tombstone picture in their personal profile.

Since tombstone is also a brand of frozen pizza, some posters make jokes about pizzas for disruptive posters.

21. The "Administration" does NOT think homosexuality is a lifestyle choice

ONE MEMBER of the administration said that... and then profusely apologized for it shortly thereafter.

If a person makes a mistake... then owns up to the mistake and apologizes for it... you consider it to still be indicative of the thinking of their boss?

God bless you for never uttering anything you later regretted and apologized for. Perfection must be such a burden for you.

that would be considered anti-gay?

And it's highly ironic that some people's approach to being "truly progressive" consists of considering withholding their votes to teach this administration some sort of lesson, thereby doing their bit to usher the Republicans, those staunch defenders of equal rights (oh yeah...NOT) back to power.

47. It's a direct quote of Obama.
And it translates into an absolute absence of support and absence of effort for LGBT Marriage Equality. That is definitely an anti-gay policy.

Defending DADT in court with homophobic language, more homophobic, in fact, than the original congressional language that went into passing the law, when that defense in not legally necessary is an anti-gay policy. Especially while lying to claim that he somehow supports repealing DADT while he's enforcing it and supporting it in the courts.

62. The President is supporting resurrecting DADT by appealing.
So there's that little anti-gay tidbit. Right now, the discharges are halted. If the administration has a stay granted, more lives are destroyed. Sec. Gates has said the discharges would continue even if/when Congress repeals the law.

This is anti-gay. Realistically, practically . . . pragmatically, some might say.

Destroying gay people's lives out of political advantage or calculation is anti-gay.

Not that the admin is anti-gay. If you don't like the law and regs involved then you can't like this government and you should leave. B/c what they do is in line with the law. Since DOMA and DADT are part of the constitution and the constitution is part the client of the DOJ in affect it must defend it. I have nothing else to say behind it...because everything else suggests the admin is working around the legal restraints as much as possible.

+1 to yours. Check out mine. I've had plenty of recs apparently, but just as many unrecs from those who feel the anti-gay vibe from this admin. that promised to be "fierce". That's okay, to each their own opinion on each of our posts, as they have the right to write the one that upset you so much - but NO opinions are acceptable about EQUALITY!!! If you're not hardcore for equality, I'm not sure why someone would come here. Saying "Lifestyle Choice" is deeply deeply deeply offensive to Gay people, I HOPE this is obvious to those that perhaps didn't understand before?

If you can't handle that, you can't handle DU. If you let one poster effect you so much that you don't want to be on DU then how do you deal with the real world? We are ultra protected here in that it is a very liberal environment to post and express opinions and discuss issues. As someone who grew up with conservative parents, I heard opinions every day that I did not agree with at all. You know what? I chose not to let it stop me from living my own life. Just some advice. And I don't necessarily think Obama is all that great on gay issues but I also don't think one poster should lead someone to give up on DU.

you haven't really been paying attention.

They're less anti-gay than the republicans, but that does NOT make them pro-gay by any stretch of the imagination. :eyes:

He's openly against LGBT marriage equality.

He is having his DoJ defend homophobic laws that they don't have a legal need to defend, using homophobic language that compares us to pedophiles.

He refused to use executive orders to help us end the purge of LGBT people from the military even though military law experts said he could, on three different precedents as Commander in Chief.

The stuff he has done falls into categories like "taking credit for stuff other people did", "taking credit for stuff that was already done", and "got credit for saying something."

None of the stuff he has done gives us a civil right. None! And all of it was stuff that could be easily walked back by the next president with the stroke a pen, because it wasn't even high enough profile stuff to build pressure TOWARDS civil rights.

He gave us throw-away stuff a political advisory no-doubt put in front of him to try to placate the LGBT community without ever really giving us anything, and it is infuriating as hell that we're supposed to fall for it. It is infuriating that straight people here are Demanding that we fall for it and accept it in place of real civil rights. x(

59. A lot of us are sick of it too, but don't give up on people
For a lot of people this is not a simple case of civil rights. They want to cloud it with religion and norms and all the crap they're fed. Sometimes people fear god more than they love their fellow human beings.

And for those who are homophobic, well don't let them win. Refuse to be bitter and just keep up the fight until you win.

63. If you polled registered members at this site my guess
is you'd find very, very close to 100 percent support for fair, true, and equal rights of citizenship for all.

If you don't want to read or post here, that's your call.

I'd volunteer to drive you to the bus station but I'm watching a couple dozen mice with human brains masturbating on a satanic altar.

75. You are simply uninformed
Edited on Fri Oct-15-10 02:17 PM by zulchzulu
Granted, more needs to be done, but you really should get your facts correct regarding what has been done the last couple years. Here's a great list...

1. Reversed an inexcusable US position by signing the UN Declaration on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity
2. Extended benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees in 2009 and, further, in 2010
3. Endorsed the Baldwin-Lieberman bill, The Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act of 2009, to provide FULL partnership benefits to federal employees
4. Signed the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act
5. Lifted the HIV Entry Ban effective January 2010
6. Released the first Presidential PRIDE proclamations since 2000
7. Hosted the first LGBT Pride Month Celebration in White House history
8. Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Harvey Milk and Billie Jean King, joining past recipients such as Rosa Parks
9. Appointed the first ever transgender DNC member
10. Issued diplomatic passports, and provided other benefits, to the partners of same-sex foreign service employees
11. Committed to ensuring that HUD’s core housing programs are open to all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity
12. Conceived a National Resource Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Elders -- the nation's first ever -- funded by a three-year HHS grant to SAGE
13. Testified in favor of ENDA, the first time any official of any administration has testified in the Senate on ENDA
14. Signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which expanded existing United States federal hate crime law to include crimes motivated by a victim’s actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability -- the first positive federal LGBT legislation in the nation's history
15. Hired and appointed a record number of qualified LGBT Americans (like these), including more than 20 Senate-confirmed appointments
16. Sworn in Ambassador David Huebner
17. Changed the culture of government everywhere from – among others – HUD and HHS to the Export-Import Bank, the State Department, and the Department of Education
18. Appointed Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, instead of conservatives who would have tilted the Court even further to the right and virtually doomed our rights for a generation. To wit (quoting McCain): "I've said a thousand times on this campaign trail, I've said as often as I can, that I want to find clones of Alito and Roberts. I worked as hard as anybody to get them confirmed. I look you in the eye and tell you I've said a thousand times that I wanted Alito and Roberts. I have told anybody who will listen. I flat-out tell you I will have people as close to Roberts and Alito ."
19. Named open transgender appointees (the first President ever to do so)
20. Banned job discrimination based on gender identity throughout the Federal government (the nation's largest employer)
21. Emphasized LGBT inclusion in everything from the President’s historic NAACP address (“The pain of discrimination is still felt in America. By African American women paid less for doing the same work as colleagues of a different color and a different gender. By Latinos made to feel unwelcome in their own country. By Muslim Americans viewed with suspicion simply because they kneel down to pray to their God. By our gay brothers and sisters, still taunted, still attacked, still denied their rights.”) . . . to the first paragraph of his Family Day proclamation (“Whether children are raised by two parents, a single parent, grandparents, a same-sex couple, or a guardian, families encourage us to do our best and enable us to accomplish great things”) and his Mothers Day proclamation ("Nurturing families come in many forms, and children may be raised by two parents, a single mother, two mothers, a step-mom, a grandmother, or a guardian. Mother's Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate these extraordinary caretakers") . . . to creating the chance for an adorable 10-year-old at the White House Easter Egg roll to tell ABC World News how cool it is to have two mommies . . . to including the chair of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce along with the Secretary of the Treasury and the President of Goldman Sachs in the small audience for the President’s economic address at the New York Stock Exchange . . . to welcoming four gay couples to its first State Dinner
22. Recommitted, in a televised address, to passing ENDA . . . repealing Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell . . . repealing the so-called Defense of Marriage Act
23. Spoken out against discrimination at the National Prayer Breakfast ("We may disagree about gay marriage, but surely we can agree that it is unconscionable to target gays and lesbians for who they are -- whether it's here in the United States or, as Hillary mentioned, more extremely in odious laws that are being proposed most recently in Uganda.")
24. Dispatched the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to call on the Senate to repeal Don't Ask / Don't Tell, in the meantime dialing back on discharges
25. Launched a website to gather public comment on first-ever federal LGBT housing discrimination study
26. Appointed long-time equality champion Chai Feldblum one of the four Commissioners of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
27. Eliminated the discriminatory Census Bureau policy that kept our relationships from being counted, encouraging couples who consider themselves married to file that way, even if their state of residence does not yet permit legal marriage
28. Produced U.S. Census Bureau PSAs featuring gay, lesbian, and transgender spokespersons.
29. Instructed HHS to require any hospital receiving Medicare or Medicaid funds (virtually all hospitals) to allow LGBT visitation rights.
30. Appointed Retired Colonel Margarethe Cammermeyer, an early public champion of open service in the military, to the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services
31. Required all grant applicants seeking HUD funding to comply with state and local anti-discrimination laws that protect LGBT individuals.
32. Adopted transgender recommendations on the issuance of gender-appropriate passports that will ease barriers to safe travel and that will provide government-issued ID that avoids involuntary "outing" in situations requiring ID, like hiring, where a gender-appropriate driver's license or birth certificate is not available
33. Extended domestic violence protections to LGBT victims
34. Publicly invited shunned MIssissippi high school prom student to the White House
35. Extended the Family and Medical Leave Act to cover employees taking unpaid leave to care for the children of same-sex partners
36. Issued guidance specifically to assist LGBT tenants denied housing on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity
37. Issued a National HIV/AIDS Strategy praised as "long-overdue" by the Task Force, Lambda and others
38. Successfully fought for UN accreditation of IGLHRC (the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission) -- against Republican attempts to block it
39. Convened the first-ever anti-bullying summit to craft a national strategy to reduce bullying in schools.
40. Awarded $13.3 million to the LA Gay & Lesbian Center to create a model program for LGBTQ youth in the foster care system.

Consider these accomplishments and obviously still be vigilant to get more LGBT laws passed.

82. If they're so all-fired pro-gay, then what is keeping them from
saying that states have the right to allow gay marriage if they so choose?

Why not let the judge's ruling stand and let DADT fall quietly by the wayside?

84. The first one is DOMA.
States already have that right.

The problem is whether other states will *accept* that marriage, or if people have to be in certain states to get married.

As far as DADT goes, without Congress, or appeals all the way up, are you concerned about the possibility that another judge can just flip the switch and bring it back?

88. So why is the Obama administration CONTESTING the judge's decision on DADT?
They're playing, "Oh, if we stand up for gay people, then the Republicans won't like us."

That's why.
