As I read the story, Brown was in the room and part of the dialouge. If you fire him you're admitting that you only did it because he got caught (you can't very well pretend that you didn't know until the story came out).

Announce that he had been chastised at the time... that Brown doesn't agree with the statement and regrets it. Then move on.

This should not be that big a deal. It's a close race, but not close enough for this to make the difference. So Brown wins by two or three instead of winning by five... who cares?

The conversation had to do with Brown's concern over supposedly anti-union Meg, Ms Spine of Steel hereslf, cutting a deal with this police union over pensions in return for their endorsement.

First of all it was dumb and sloppy to not cut off the message when Brown stopped talking. You never want anything unnoficial to get out--especially on tape.

I do think that this could turn out to be rather good for Jerry. Since Whitman's tried to hang his union support around his neck, having Brown fretting about how this police union might not endorse him because they know he won't cut a deal with them and she--despite her anti-union rhetoric--will do whatever they want to get their endorsement--is not a bad thing. If he'd been caught telling his guys to give the union what they wanted it would have been bad--real bad.

As for the whore thing--I'm sure Meg Whitman will go crying sexism to the media about this and some people might actually believe it--just as some people believed that she had no idea, no clue that her housekeeper could possibly have been an illegal alien--but in the long run it takes Whitman's strongest arguement against Brown and stands it on it's head.

You'd almost think the Brown people wanted this to get out.
