Will Republicans Regret Their Pledge?

Ezra Klein on the GOP's Pledge to America: "Their policy agenda is detailed and specific -- a decision they will almost certainly come to regret. Because when you get past the adjectives and soaring language, the talk of inalienable rights and constitutional guarantees, you're left with a set of hard promises that will increase the deficit by trillions of dollars, take health-care insurance away from tens of millions of people, create a level of policy uncertainty businesses have never previously known, and suck demand out of an economy that's already got too little of it."

2. I think they will regret it...
It was a strategic error, politically speaking. They were doing quite well with their "just say no" to everything the President and the Democrats proposed. Now they have put out an incredible plan to return to the Bush taxcuts and balance the budget and keep the defense spending. People know it is a fraud.

You will never go broke by underestimating the intelligence of the American people.

4. If the Dems retain the House and Senate...
Repubs will split on the reason for it. It will either be the Tea Party's fault or their "Contract on America"..er...Pledge to America...

5. A Republicant Congress Will Be The Perfect Foil For President Obama In 012

Then he will have something to run against in 012 if the economy doesn't improve.

With the presidential veto the Republicants can only obstruct not legislate.

6. I'm not sure we disagree here...
I think if the Repubs win, it will be to Barack Obama's advantage in 2012. Bill Clinton said something similar the other day.

8. You make a good point...
But I think enough people will see it as a fraud to maybe make a difference in a few races. Along with their marriage to the Tea Party, it could help the Dems keep the House and Senate. At least, I hope so. :-)

9. I was happy when I saw what their 'pledge' was
A bunch of standard, canned, lunacy and worn out standard GOP talking points. Good luck with that GOP.

12. Sound Familiar?
Looks like the establishment GOP likes the Pledge just fine, while the more hard-core conservatives (see Erickson, Erick) think it's a mealy-mouthed sellout. Looks like the left isn't alone in having a few Jane Hamsher-types in our midst.
