The GOP is slowly committing suicide.
Once the relatively "reasoned" party of Lincoln, TR, Ike, and Rockefeller, the R's are now the party of Angle, O'Donnell, Miller, Beck, Limbaugh, Palin and the ultra-white, ultra-right, corporate-manufactured "Tea Party" wing of the party. It is causing real fractures within that party now, and going forward it will most certainly lead to their implosion as they insist upon purging moderates from their ranks and turning ever further to the right-wing ideological fringe. While the party overall may make some gains in this one recession mid-term (doubtful though they will take over Congress), in the medium to long term as they continue on this ultra-right track they are electorally doomed in this rapidly changing nation. One need look no further than their primary election of the extremist O'Donnell in Delaware to understand to what extent that party is losing touch with reality. (See Below) The GOP is slowly committing suicide.

***In this election cycle, what we need to do is very aggressively seize on their self-imposed destruction and attack them and their Tea Party wing as the crazy extremists that they are. So let's get out there and get to work.***

Things are getting very interesting.

Poll: Coons leads O'Donnell by 16 points
By Frank Gerace
Updated Wednesday, September 22, 2010 - 11:24pm

A new poll shows Democratic US Senate candidate Chris Coons with a whopping lead over Repbublican Christine O'Donnell.

The CNN/Time Opinion Research survey released Wednesday shows Coons, currently New Castle County Executive, leading O'Donnell 55 to 39 percent among likely voters.

O'Donnell last week beat longtime Congressman Mike Castle in the GOP primary.

1. As Twain said, "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated".
Or as Yogi said, "It ain't over till it's over".

It's foolish to prematurely dance on the grave of the GOP. Keep fighting.

9. I am NOT "dancing on the grave of the GOP prematurely" at all. If you read the OP, I said what they
they are doing now is hurting them badly in the medium and long term, and I said what we need to do NOW is attack them and work like crazy to defeat them. Please read the content before responding.

20. I'm responding to the premise in the subject of your OP because I don't agree with it.
I don't need to read the content before responding since I'm responding to the subject line.

You've been here at DU long enough. Do you actually believe that everyone reads all the content before responding? It might be nice but it is certainly no requirement for responding to a thread.

Suicide is and end-all solution to what is likely a temporary situation.

I do not think the rethuglican party is going to disappear the way a suicidal person does.

30. It's obviously a metaphor. As the GOP turns ever further right, they will eventually diminish in
size and scope, and their electoral strength will deteriorate. Are you saying that the Tea Party helps them nationally in the long term? Pushing out all moderation is a good thing for them electorally in the long? Don't think so.

22. Republicans are like cockroaches as long there is a dark corner to hide in they thrive.
And no corner is darker than one shaded by race baiting, homophobia, ignorance, dishonesty, fear, and failure.

3. The same poll also
shows that Castle would have lead Coons by 18 points. Not really surprising but interesting.

OTOH I don't think that we should generalize too much the irrational behavior of a few thousand Rs in DE. It's relevant, but most definitely does not represent the whole country, nor all Rs, not all people that may vote R.

6. And yet, a significant chunk of our electorate will vote for these sociopaths.
Thanks to: religion and a culture that frowns on rational thought, a populace that sits meekly while business takes over government, a substandard education system and a wholly owned corporate media.

18. Most people can't name their senators or representative
So assuming knowledge of the radical agenda of the GOP will sink into public consciousness might be a lot to ask. The vast majority of people don't pay as much attention as the kinds of people who post on message boards.

There is hope that if the GOP maintains the loss of support among non-whites, millenials, non-christians, etc. then they will destroy themselves. Non-whites and millennials (excluding non-white millennials so they aren't counted twice) will make up about 50% of the electorate in 2020. But who knows if they/we will still vote in 2020 the way we do now. As of right now non-whites are about 2-1 dem and so are millennials.

25. Don't be so sure, there are a lot of hateful people in the US who
are rooting for President Obama to fail. We need to keep campaigning and get the vote out. Those people are vicious, can you imagine, not one of the rethugs voted to repeal DADT! They have a huge following and if Miss Sarah runs, it would be the wet dream for lots of older white males!

Do not be complacent, we already saw what happened to Senator Ted Kennedy's seat, a rethug took it. The media is promoting these assholes and by the way, am sick and tired of President Obama being Partisan to these fuckers! When is he gonna learn that those fuckers will not side with him?

31. Agree totally with your call to action ...
The Tea Party did not come into existence because of right wing strength, it came about because the GOP was adrift. The Tea Party represents the angrest part of the GOP base, which is usually held in check by other parts of the party.

Now their Frankenstein's monster is running loose.

If the Dems could win another cycle ... the GOP splits apart.

bucket.

They really ought to break down and hire a demographics polling organization to remind them that the citizenry is not enitrely made up of people like Haley Barbour and Mean Jean Schmidt.

Thank God.
