I want to believe in Obama, but I'm afraid he's going to make fun of me for belieiving in him
he's talking big now about the Bush tax cuts, saying all the right things, rich vs. poor, etc.

I like it, it's exactly what I want my democratic president to sound like. (well, technically, what I really want is for him to have eliminated the bush tax cuts immediately like Pelosi wanted to do, but I'm flexible).

I want to get behind him, and I have been, on the Bush tax cuts. But looking forward, I see the very real possibility that he will cut some deal and sign some bill extending the tax cuts "temporarily".

And then, the possibility that in a year from now he's going to be at some fundraiser making fun of me for ever expecting him to end those tax cuts at all.

"They're mad at me because I didn't bring about world peace (laughter), and because I didn't end the Bush tax cuts (laughter)...."

1. I'm done
It happened over the weekend. I was mad for a couple of hours, but at this point I'm done. I'm not going to get emotionally invested in anything this administration does. It is what it is and nothing I do is going to influence them. I unsubscribed from OFA. There is no point in my paying close attention to the process, I just have to hang around and find out what happened after the fact. I can still write my congressman, I can still write my senator. I can still donate to candidates around the country that support my positions. But I'm done caring what Obama says. He's gonna do what he's gonna do then make fun of me afterwards.

25. No, but probably should have
I kept making excuses. I was "giving him time". I blamed all sorts of folks, from Rahm, to conservadems and Blue Dogs. Somewhere around the end of 2009 I began to get disillusioned. Even most of this year I kept thinking that it was predominately just an issue with HCR and a bit of the Afghanistan action. But that fund raiser speech really did me in. I spent a few mad hours, then unsubscribed. Just decided I was done. Can't even really get spun up about November. Whatever will be will be. I suspect it is long past time to move folks one way or another. If they can't see the tea baggers for the nutjobs they are, I don't really see anyone changing that by November. And really, regardless, I suspect that democratic losses will result in a Senate barely able to function at all, and a House that will be positioning itself for the presidential race. And if the GOP get control of either house of Congress, nothing is going to get done at all.

We kept getting told that it was asking for too much too quickly. Some tried to warn that the full 4 years aren't guaranteed. We are now probably going to see that this is all too true.

26. No, I've been critical
I have criticised actions by the administration, but I still actually was operating under some thought that I mattered in some sort of opinion poll sense. But I'm done with that. They are openly hostile to people like me and have no intention of doing anything towards my goals. They see me as the problem to be ignored or marginalized.

At this point you're spamming the board. As I said in your other post on this topic...The man is speaking out of frustration and I know how I am. I'll make light of shit that pisses me off. I make light of racism and I have had my share. Why? Because it's frustrating. Rather than get support for the things he's done and understanding that hey he's up against conservadems, blue dog dems, and repubs alike who all have the same agenda---he's getting shit from us. When we should be targeting these clowns, in elections, so he can get the really progressive stuff done. Don't get me wrong---he handles the blame better than I. However, if he needs the outlet and still pushes things to get done then I'm all for it and I'll give him the credit even if he tries because I know all three of the clowns aforementioned are waiting to destroy the man. You think he's mocking you or progressives...while in actuality he's mocking the situation and having a second thread on this topic is ludicrous.

Same regurgitated tripe: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=433&topic_id=447658&mesg_id=447658

4. I assume you mean eliminate the "bush tax cuts", for those making over 250K, not those who make
less than 250K. If so, that is what he is doing, however, what are you going to do about those Democrats in Congress who want it for those greater than 250K? Do you let it lapse so the middle class will end up with higher taxes, which would be a disaster, not only politically, but in the middle of a depression, or do you compromise, even though it would allow tax breaks for those making over 250K?

No matter what the MSM says the truth is the Democrats NEVER had a majority in Congress, especially the Senate, because of those blue dogs who call themselves Democrats, but line up with the repukes and the corporations

5. let it lapse, if necessary
if they all lapse, they go back to Clinton levels. Plenty of people say that's the best thing economically. The reason for the extension up to $250,000 is political, not economic. Obama promised it in the campaign and it's good politically to extend tax cuts for so many people.

But I agree, that will be the rationale, if Obama ends up extending all the tax cuts. "We HAD to. We had NO CHOICE." etc. Thanks for the preview.

10. If that happened the MSM will say the Democrats are increasing taxes on the people during a time
of depression.

Of course the answer to that would be for the Democrats to IMMEDIATELY offer a new bill that would give tax relief to those making less than 250K

I doubt that they even think that far ahead

the only way Hillary would be better is that liberals would be suspicious of her from the start and they wouldn't give her a pass. If Hillary were president and had the exact same war strategy as Obama, she would be protested constantly by antiwar protesters.

if she fought against the public option the way Obama did, everyone would see it. If she cut the same deal Obama did with the insurance companies, liberals wouldn't be in denial about it and pretend that Obama was in favor of the public option.

57. Don't you understand that Hillary Clinton and her husband Bill Clinton are DLC?
They are farther to the right than Obama. Indeed many of the economic problems we face today is directly the result of Bill Clinton's deregulatory policies, all of which his wife supports.

Don't get it twisted, all of them, including Obama are Corporate Democrats!! The question is which one is the better "devil" than the other.

Sorry. I'm taking my changes on the current president because he is cleaning of 16+ years of Republican-DLCer/triangulatory puke on our economic system.

He's using his bully pulpit and everything. If he goes on to lose this fight, Obama will be left holding the bag, but it won't be his fault. Unfair tax advantages for the wealthy are unpopular only for the wealthy. It appears to me that chips are being called in and Democratic reps are folding left and right.

To borrow a quote from a Kevin Smith flick, a lot of people seem to be "cryin' like a bitch with a skinned knee" over misperceptions about what the President is saying.
