Chris Kofinis: GOP’s Civil War 2010 — a prelude to 2012

GOP’s Civil War 2010 — a prelude to 2012
By Chris Kofinis - 09/14/10 10:54 AM ET

How bad can the civil war get? We may find out Tuesday in Delaware. Mike Castle should have walked to the GOP nomination — that is, until Sarah Palin and her merry Tea Party men decided to back Christine O’Donnell.

To put this into perspective, Castle was all but a lock to win: a moderate Republican who would have won if not for the fact that by Tea Party standards Castle is a Das Kapital-reading, want-to-take-your-guns-away-and-tax-you-to-the-nines liberal. It almost makes you laugh, as a Democrat, how the GOP is engaged in a never-ending, brutal civil war over ideological purity.
From the Florida governor’s race to the Alaska Senate contest, from the Nevada Senate to the Utah Senate and from Colorado governor to now Delaware Senate, the Tea Party is on a warpath not against Democrats but Republicans. The question is, Where will it end? I have the answer. It won’t until 2012 (maybe).

The Tea Party that is now raging will cost the Republican Party at least two Senate seats, and maybe more House and governors’ seats, and has given the Democratic Party the nail with which to hammer in the key message to moderates and independents that this is one crazy, extreme right wing of the Republican Party that wants to grab power, having just begun its GOP bloodletting. If you thought the 2010 GOP civil war was fun to watch, wait and see what happens in 2011 and 2012. In fact, the true implications for the Republican Party will not be felt for months and months after the midterms, when the Tea Party/Sarah Palin/Dick Armey wing realize that their higher calling is to get a Tea Party president (scared yet?).

Days after the midterms, the Tea Party will paralyze Republican leaders fearful of being the next Tea Party victim. There is not a single Republican running in 2012 — for any office — who will not be thinking, “If I vote this way, the Tea Party will get me” — kind of the political version of the bogeyman for Republicans. Even with the congressional paralysis that will ensue, the Tea Party Republicans (by the way, is that an insult to Tea Partiers or not?) will not be satisfied. Nope, they have their sights on a much bigger prize — the White House, and President Obama’s defeat.

Now, here’s where it gets fun. You are going to see at least a half-dozen Tea Party candidates, from Sarah Palin to Newt Gingrich, you will have the Tea Party bandwagoners like Rick Santorum, and then you will have the establishment Republicans like Mitt Romney, who will suffer a death of a thousand cuts as they all run scared from the protests and ideological threats of their Tea Party opponents. No doubt candidates who would stand a better chance of winning, such as Mitch Daniels or John Thune, may decide to sit this internecine battle out completely. So, with every debate that will be televised and commented on ad nauseam by the cables news and blogs, the public will witness an ever-scarier vision of a Republican Party that hates — and I mean hates — moderates. They will witness candidates battling with Palin as to how far right they can get. All of this soap opera will develop and will frame Republicans as a party that is anathema to moderates and independents. Now, this is where it gets interesting.

3. Whig party do over...
Who said history never repeats itself?

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

4. "The Tea Party is on a warpath not against Democrats but Republicans"
Just as many here are on a warpath against Democrats who aren't "progressive" enough.

"The Tea Party that is now raging will cost the Republican Party at least two Senate seats"

We don't know that, and if these two tonight win, along with nut jobs like Rubio and Rand Paul, we are in trouble like never before.

"The Tea Party will paralyze Republican leaders fearful of being the next Tea Party victim"

Nothing new here. It's exactly what Reagan did when he threw out party leaders like Mary Crisp after winning in '80.

Sorry...I hope you're right, but I'm having trouble seeing the upside here.....

5. You should see all the GOP yard signs in the Northern VA outer suburbs this year.
I don't think the Tea Party scares these people at all.

6. if you get a chance read The Backlash by Will Bunch.....
I just finished reading that book and he speaks at great length about the tea parties and their inspiration, Glenn Beck. He specifically goes into detail about the one in Delaware. When that tea party began growing they were even visited by Karl Rove who tried to get them to back Castle instead of O'Donnell. But they didn't care much for Rove, they thought he seemed too snobby and too much like the DC establishment they were against. When that didn't work, they were visited by other republicans who also wanted them to back Castle. This second group also told them to stop watching Glenn Beck and to stop praying at their meetings.........that meeting didn't go so well either.......

Anyway, it's been a very interesting book...

9. I'm not sure either. We can only hope Dems and Indies see
how nutso some people are and don't embrace that nuttiness.

And there are also rethugs who aren't totally around the bend. We have a big tent; they're invited!

12. 2012
Romney IS going to have trouble In the primarys against the teabaggers for his past days as Liberal Republican. This IS guy who used
to be prochoice(despite what he would claim) when he ran against Ted Kennedy for thes enate(and got his ass beat) claimed he would
he more progay than Ted Kennedy, back In 2001 claimed not to be part of the republican Saint Reagan and the Bushes Crowds. And as Governor pushed through a health care bill similar to the Obama plan Congress passed. One thing that could help him Is Palin,Gingrich,
and Huchabee could split the teabagger vote.Of course then Democrats will have a field day with Romney.

13. Romney, for all his savvy as a bizman, always seemed like a
used car salesman to me. I can't shake that. And now you're telling me he's like mccain, changing his stances with the wind, depending on what would benefit him. I hate that in anyone, politicians especially (and yes, they do it the most).

17. If these teabaggers' hand picked candidates lose in 2010 they won't get a shot at affecting 2012.
Dick Armey will begin to wrangle them back into the fold just to stop them from screwing over their chances of finding a decent candidate to face Obama.

19. Maybe so but if they lose this fall you do realize that they'll try to move back to the center
to try to win power? They have no principles despite all the talk about small government, they only really care about getting power. These people only do reaction. The tea party movement is a reaction against how moderate john mccain tried to play nice and lost to Obama. If their candidates lose this fall their party will quickly try to take control of the grassroots and put it back in the hands of the bosses.

20. Do you know what? I don't give a flying flip what
they do in the future, and have no dog in this race now.

It's the baggers vs. the gop. I will watch with interest, and sadness that there are so many stupid people in this country.

GO, DEMS!

23. Oh no they won't
Nothing could convince them to move back to the center now. They're drunk with ideological purity. Maybe if they get really hammered in 2012, but I doubt it. The Republicans will stay extreme until it becomes apparent that they can't win national elections at all and are a permanent minority. At that point, they will shift or go the way of the Whigs.

invested in their mythology. They won't be giving up their blankies.

I'm sorry, I've just been informed that Dick Armey is an actual person, rather than a euphemism for the Tea Party itself.

25. Good luck with that. 2012 Presidential starts about 5 minutes after the midterms
and the Republicans don't have anyone in the field right now likely to take it away from Obama.

22. A good read!
"Much like we are witnessing, the Tea Party leaders would rather lose the seat and prove some fruitless point than win."

I only hope they keep that up and Democrats and Democratic supporters see the results of that kind of thinking.
