President Obama to address Iraq, Afghanistan and economy in wide-ranging press conference

WASHINGTON - President Obama resumes his election-year offensive Friday when he takes questions at his first full-blown press conference since May.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs indicated Obama will hammer Republicans for insisting on preserving tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.

Obama will make an opening statement at 11 a.m. and then answer questions in the East Room on what is expected to be a wide range of topics, from the economy to Afghanistan and Iraq to the flap over the proposed lower Manhattan mosque and the threats of a Koran-burning stunt.

"I think it's as good a time as any for the President to talk about the economy, talk about what's at stake in the upcoming election," spokesman Robert Gibbs told the Daily News.

Gibbs suggested Obama would pick up where he left off in Ohio on Wednesday, when he took aim at House GOP leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Republicans for dusting off Bush-era economic plans and presenting them as a solution to the economic meltdown begun during the previous administration.
