Kevin Rader/Eyewitness News

Indianapolis - Immigration is one of the most contentious political issues in America, and it is turning into a major issue in the race for United States Senate in Indiana.

Illegal immigration is a hot button issue not only on the front line in the state of Arizona but right here in Indiana.

"There is only one person in this race and that is former Senator Dan Coats who voted to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants," said Brad Ellsworth (D-IN)

Senate candidate and Congressman Brad Ellsworth chided his Republican opponent for saying he was against illegal immigration while voting for amnesty in 1984.

"I will never vote to wave that wand and grant amnesty to illegal immigrants. People should come here and do it the right way by the path laid out in the rules," said Ellsworth.

Tell me once again, what is the difference to a Latino voter between Blue Dog Ellsworth, who also opposes LGBT rights. abortion rights, and repeal of DADT, and corrupt former lobbyist Dan Coats?

It is sad that it was Ellsworth who played the immigration card first.

1. Which side are you on illegal immigration?
I am bifurcated on this issue. On one hand this country is entirely
made up of immigrants beginning with the arrival of Mayflower.

On other hand this country can not flourish and survive when laws are
not respected and followed.

2. I am against demagoguing the issue
There is going to be some sort of amnesty to bring people into legal status. Bush had the right idea, but got shot down by his own party. Obama has spoken about it, but he hasn't introduced a bill.

3. Amnesty is highly unpopular and no politician will run on it
SO, only time this can take place is during the lame duck term
of this president. Bush also started talking about immigration reform
during his 2nd term.

4. I willl not vote for Ellsworth - pure and simple.
I despise Coats, but Ellsworth would be another Ben Nelson.
