1. Thanks. I'll trust R2000 over Gallup any day

But the trend is the same, even thought the gap is about 11 points off.

24. Gallup is always fudging against the Dems.
They are bought and paid for by the Repuks. No other polling co is used because they they don't hsve the right data. You know that the MSM is trying to bring down his numbers. Some peple on this page are too.

18. Favorability and job approval are different
Some pollsters do both (job approval and favorability) and favorability scores higher on average. The last Washington Post/ABC poll, for example, does favorability and job approval separate. While Obama's job approval average among all pollsters is currently 48.4%, his favorable rating is 52.7%.

I really thought there would be no underwater point in his first term
But at 47%-46% it seems almost a certainty he will hit net disapproval at some point, at least temporarily.

3. Nah there is always about 15% who have no opinion
he has to drop to the low 40's to be at any real risk.

5. 47%-46% isn't a range. That's the approve/disapprove in today's poll
I should have been more explicit.

4. Normal
"Thus far in December, Obama has averaged 50% job approval. That is similar to the December averages for Ronald Reagan (49%) and Bill Clinton (53%), who also took office when the economy was struggling."

8. for what it's worth...
PRINCETON, NJ -- Barack Obama's presidential job approval rating is 47% in the latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking update, a new low for his administration to date. His approval rating has been below 50% for much of the time since mid-November, but briefly rose to 52% last week after he announced his new Afghanistan policy.

36. And President Obama inherited an economy WAY worse than the
one Reagan inherited.....Many people are pissed off & short of patience, & unrealisticly expected Obama to have fixed the utter mess that was in his inbox on 1/20/09...Furthermore, back in Reagan's first term, I doubt things are as highly polorized as they are now...Republicans are doing everything & anything they can to obstruct & delay health care, judicial nominations, etc...

And then are other issues besides the struggling economy (Afganistan, Iraq, health care, climate change, etc.), considering everything President Obama is dealing with, 50% ain't bad at all..

7. This is not unexpected given all the controversial issues the President is dealing with.
Plus the hammering he is getting 7x24 from right-wingnut media. In fact, it really does not matter at this point -- no elections for quite awhile.

9. No elections, but we are having votes in the senate every day
Approval matters because people look to it to see what side they want to be on.

The "wrong side of history" argument is tougher to make to blue-dogs when the prez isn't polling well.

Mid-term polls are part of how we measure political capital.

34. Any evidence of decline in his "political capital"?
HCR is humming along right now and I haven't seen any evidence of a huge backlash against him in Congress- certainly nothing like what I remember with Clinton. The Repubs have plenty of their own issues as well.

Then there's the liberal biosphere - he's being hammered by everyone

33. Thank You
There is no valid way to compare their approval ratings right now because Palin is not (and heaven willing NEVER going to be) POTUS. She is not out there making tough choices about anything- just yapping her trap and biting Obama's ankles- just like the rest of the RW.

39. It's getting less popular every day.
Remember that the Viet Nam War had broad popular support when it started. So did our incursion into Iraq at first. If history is any guide, Obama's war will have less and less popular support as time passes.

the economy.

Folks are either hurting already or worried that they will soon be hurting. It's only natural in any recession. To say nothing of a great recession.
