What's the most disappointing thing Obama has done as president? Honduras?
For me it was approving the coup d'etat in Honduras. They closed down the press, killed several of the presidential candidates including many others, had a very low percentage of the population actually voting since they were boycotting the election, yet the liberals here are all talking about how great it is. And like the US had nothing to do with - which is kind of like when the Russians used to say what was going on in the Polish communist leadership had nothing to do with them. Why did Reagan say "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" when he was in East Germany which was run by Honecker? The US has more control over what goes on in Honduras than Russia had in East Germany (and Russia's influence on East Germany was considerable).

A lot of things have happened since Obama was president but this is the most disappointing. Just as the left in Colombia was slaughtered as they tried to enter electoral politics in the 1980s (with US help), and realized the only option left to them was to pick up the gun and join FARC, since elections were violently closed for them, so I think it is apparent that only a guerrilla movement can restore democracy in Honduras. Then the liberals here who are so happy about what happened in Honduras can jump on board US military action against that.

But of course, after an army coup d'etat, after presidential candidates were killed, after soldiers marched in and closed the press, after many opposition organizers were killed, they held an "election". Which most people boycotted, and which a very small minority of the population voted in. Iran and Egypt have "elections" as well, I don't hear the liberals here crowing about how great a democracy Iran is. Because obviously Iran isn't, despite its "elections".

Here on DU, we are no longer restrained by such silly, quaint notions as "reality" if it means blaming THAT ONE for whatever our fevered minds can dream up.

Get with it!

14. This article is nonsense
"But two fundamental conditions of legitimacy were met. The defeated candidates all accepted the winner's victory, and the turn-out (more than 61 percent) was higher than on previous occasions, meaning that the electorate did not follow Zelaya's recommendation to abstain."

The defeated candidates all accepted the winner's victory? Presidential candidate Cesar Ham was killed! So yes, all of the defeated candidates, who had not been killed before the election, or who had not dropped out of the election due to fraud and persecution (Carlos Reyes) or who were not boycotting the election (Zelaya), accepted the defeat.

Also the 61% turnout number is completely bogus, but in a situation where the coup leaders are killing off the opposition, it seems a pointless thing to quibble over. If the army has marched in and closed the press of anyone opposing the coup, if presidential candidates like Cesar Ham are killed, along with many others, the government can pull any number out of a hat it wants to.

2. I'm disappointed
Obama should be able to pay off the deficit, fix health care, create millions of new jobs, create world peace, end world hunger, bring home the troops, capture Bin Laden, and walk on water in only a few short months.

He is a failure.

:sarcasm:

Which is the only real thing I'm disappointed about. I'm disappointed that he put my gay Daughter's civil rights, and those of others like her, on the back burner.

13. Zelaya's term ends in January, the succession issue had to be resolved.
The regularly scheduled elections with candidates chosen before the coup was the only way to bring the political crisis to a close.

The Administration condemned the coup when it happened, but the issue of succession could not go unanswered.
