I look forward to the deification of two term President Obama about 30 years from now.

10. Yeah most of that worship stuff happened when he was gone.
Obama hasn't done much ideological stuff though so I don't know why he would be seen as the father of progressive legislation or any such thing. He is trying to fix things but marginally and within the current system.

11. Keep these phrases in mind
"Landmark sweeping health care reform"

"The most extensive Wall Street reform since the Great Depression"

Regardless of what you think about either of these programs and their details, history is written by the victors. Obama was victorious in both of these fights. He and his supporters own how history will be written on them.

Hmm.... Sometimes your "victories" come back to haunt you.

Shall we talk about Clinton's banking reforms?

22 million jobs and the greatest post-war economy ever. See how that "victor writing history" thing works?

23. Right, you never hear about NAFTA or DADT
Hardly ever makes the news at all.

And Clinton wasn't on television just a month ago explaining his mistakes in banking reform.

All you ever hear about with Clinton is......

Well, a wedding. Um, this blue dress. Um, a balanced budget that is now gone. And.... Um.....

Your right, they just worship him.

that are not able to pass ANY legislation of their own.

Once the far left can pony up to the table and actually accomplish something, I'll take your arguments seriously.

42. Except straighten out the DLC messes
It's the left that ultimately has to drag the DLC kicking in screaming into the future and clean up their messes. All these "wins" have to be fixed, and it will take the left 10 years to straighten them all out. Single payer is inevitable and we can only hope the democrats are in a position to pass such "unworkable leftist" ideas when the time comes, otherwise we'll get the GOP version including whatever mandates they can dream up, not to mention their version of cadillac taxes. Heck, we're still trying to get Medicare Part D fixed, 'cause that GOP brought us that mess, and Obama decided it was great. Just had to "fix" the donut hole. Never mind that they were reaching the hole because we couldn't negotiate the prices to begin with. Gotta protect those Pharma profits, just like Obama negotiated on day one.

35. Yet we worked on healthcare instead of creating jobs.
I still don't see a hefty infrastructure build. Where would we be had we been singularly focused on jobs jobs jobs? It's like Bush and Afghanistan. We got the early part done and then moved our attention to Iraq. Obama got the banking system restarted and assumed everything would be back to normal but it didn't happen. Now he is talking about an infrastructure project. Good luck on that one.

17. And how much was the real unemployment rate under Reagan?
The definition of unemployment has remained the same for a few decades. It isn't the same measure used back during the Depression, but we aren't the same country anymore either.

24. my understanding is that "unemployment" has been redefined to
exclude the under-employed, and those no longer looking for work. We need REAL measures, not ones that hide the distress.

Again, REAL unemployment is closer to 18-20% NOW.

No torture prosecutions at all, in fact he told them he "had their backs".
Gitmo still open, no trials, and he just wants to make it permanent in Illinois.
Couldn't find ANYTHING illegal done under Bush/Cheney.
Cadillac Taxes.
Mandates.
No Public option.
Major escalation in Afghanistan with no end date at all.
Sticking with the SOFA and continuing the Bush policies In Iraq.
Keeping Gates.
Still expelling gay service members even though DADT gives him the authority to stop them.
Giving the DoD ANOTHER year to "study" their bigotry so that the bigots don't get their feelings hurt if some gay people are serving.
Timothy Gietner protecting the bank bonuses.
Howard Dean apparently is of absolutely no use to them what so ever.
But Larry Summers is.
Blocking more stringent bank regulations.
Honoring Rick Warren
Complaining publicly that the unions "wasted" money campaigning for their candidate in Arkansas
Arlon Specter.
And the most twisted logic in response to the Prop 8 result anyone on either side of the aisle ever uttered on the subject.

Especially the replies that act like they're either informing the OP of something he/she didn't already think (thereby missing the entire, flamebait point of the thread) or, worse, the ones who thought they were clever in doing it. Awkward.

66. ditto
this place has gone batshit.

obama was a lame duck on progressive issues virtually since day 1, and pretty much every time i come here now i want to scream DEMS DON'T HAVE THE VOTES!!!! and then i want to scream HE'S NOT AND NEVER WAS A PROGRESSIVE!!!!

i didn't even vote for obama so how come i'm not pissed at him like so many other progressives here seem to be? how come i seem to be one of the very few progressives who can see that he's not in a position to be making any demands because the blue dogs (and the party of no) hold all the power?

as high a pedestal as the obama supporters here had him on, it was only half as high as the one the progressives had him on before they yanked it out from under him.

a little pragmatism is in order. he can either be all principled and be about as effective as kucinich, or he can compromise and get shit done. you can argue with me until you're blue in the face about the effectiveness of what he has accomplished so far, but you can't make nothing look better than something.
