Obama’s Birthday Dinner With Oprah
By PETER BAKER
CHICAGO – The ladies of “The View” may have gotten him on the set, but Oprah got him for the birthday.

Among the very few friends who joined President Obama for a private birthday dinner on Wednesday night was none other than the talk show queen, Oprah Winfrey, who of course was a critical backer during his 2008 campaign.

With his family out of town – Michelle and Sasha in Spain, Malia at summer camp – Mr. Obama flew here to celebrate his 49th in relatively quiet fashion, with a three-hour meal at one of his hometown’s hot restaurants, graham elliott, owned by Graham Elliott Bowles, a contestant on Top Chef Masters.

On the very exclusive guest list was Ms. Winfrey, joined by Gayle King, her good friend and editor at large at O magazine. Also attending were Mr. Obama’s senior White House adviser, Valerie Jarrett, and close friends Eric Whitaker and Marty Nesbitt. A crowd of bystanders waited for hours outside the restaurant for a glimpse of the president until he exited with a smile and a wave before heading back to his house in the Kenwood-Hyde Park area.

3. She endorsed and campaigned for him early which was something she had never done for any other
candidate before so I think she qualifies as more then just a donor - more of a friend and supporter. I don't really know why going out to eat along with other friends is creepy.

4. I told you. I don't like oprah. She scammed scared women out of money for a phoney lecture series
allegedly "empowering them using the methods of The Secret and such like preaching it would get them to make money. I remember that lecture tour and that was the first time I looked at Oprah differently. I liked her before that. No doubt Oprah and her money are "useful" but I find her and her girls school, and the predator headmistress, and everything about her creepy.

Need a break from politics, you know.............There's so many places to get news/politics nowadays, you feel like your head will explode....

I don't read the Star anymore, since they turned it into a bad version of People mag. Actually, the Enquirer has broken many a big credible news story. Would I go there for my news, of course not. I think the alien stories are in the Sun, don't read that either.

It's funny how many people won't admit they read the Enquirer, Inquiring minds want to know...........I'm not insecure about my intellect!

Even with the "predator headmistress," I'd wager that Oprah has done more for women and young girls than you could ever hope to.

Is she perfect? Far from it. But I admire her attention to the plight of young women in Africa and her desire to change the lives of girls there for the better, even if some ugliness came out in the process.

that was so important to" him when he hired Rielle Hunter. I distinctly remember your posts pointing out his responsibility and castigating him for not doing 'due diligence'....oh, wait a minute...it was the reverse... in that case, I believe your posts castigated Rielle and quite vigorously if my memory serves correctly.

I might have a modicum of respect for your post if it at least were consistent but, instead, it smacks of pure hypocrisy, imo.

approve it or exonerate him or anyone else. And none of this has anything to do with why I think Oprah was a poor choice as a B'day guest. And why that gets you all perturbed, I have no idea. For some reason, it seems offensive to you that I do not like Oprah. Deal with it. I don't.

116.  Thread Hijacking? The title of the thread is Obama's B'day Dinner with Oprah.
And since folks constantly ask me to provide "proof" for anything I allege, though they don't accept it when I do, I would like some evidence that Obama and Oprah were close personal friends before her ran for the Presidency. I agree he knows her now, and he "owes" her, which is in itself creepy.

There was some indication that they both attended the same church and they both had homes in Chicago, but until the president ran for office, I see no evidence they were more than extremely casual acquaintances. And BTW, before some rant on about her early endorsement of him, I know for an absolute fact, that our former governor, who was also one of the first to endorse the president, didn't know him in the least bit till she decided on the politics of endorsing him. Most people have never even met those they endorse.I think Oprah "may have met Obama but I really find it unlikely they were or are "close personal friends". She is however , a huge donor," and source of promotion for him, which some view as a good thing.

I was far more concerned about other things with the Kerry Campaign than an unknown state senator from Illinois. I never even saw his convention speech till years later. And once again, I do not "hate" the President. He is just a politician to me. He has good days and bad days. He doesn't walk on water. And I voted for him and campaigned a little bit. He is still my President no matter how unhappy some of the things he does may make me. My vote counted just as much as anyone elses.

35. Let me put it this way.
I have never voted for anyone due to their race or gender, but many did precisely that in 2008. There were two historical candidates and some voted for one or the other based on their race or gender. I have no issue with someone like Kerry, who endorsed Obama on principle, but that was not Oprah's reason. I would have more respect for her if she had stayed neutral and had supported both candidates.

I would have more respect for her if she had stayed neutral and had supported both candidates.

101. She contradicts herself several times.
She says she'd have more respect for Oprah if she was neutral, but she's upset because she didn't "empower women" by choosing Hillary. Then she says Oprah endorsed Obama because he's black but can't explain why Oprah didn't endorse Sharpton, Jackson, Moseley-Braun, etc. when they ran.

BTW, a big :toast: to your post.

60. Who did?
Do you have evidence to suggest Oprah only voted for and supported Obama because of his race?

You suggest she was friends with Clinton. Probably. But she was very close with the Obamas - even before he ran for president.

They're both from Chicago. Both attended the same church at one point and cultivated a strong friendship over the years.

It's a no-brainer that she supported his campaign.

Until you provide a source where Oprah only endorsed Obama based solely on his race, please don't spread that kind of disinformation.

with the in/hip crowd. We know this, the question is, will they now show up for him in 2012? Or will the novelty have worn off. I think there won't be the same level of interest as in 2008. I would say 1 out of every 3 votes or so won't show up this time, who voted for the 1st time in '08.

49. And Now... Direct From Don Henley & Glenn Frey
I turn on the tube and what do I see
A whole lotta people cryin' "Don't blame me"
They point their crooked little fingers ar everybody else
Spend all their time feelin' sorry for themselves
Victim of this, victim of that
Your momma's too thin; your daddy's too fat

Get over it
Get over it
All this whinin' and cryin' and pitchin' a fit
Get over it, get over it

You say you haven't been the same since you had your little crash
But you might feel better if I gave you some cash
The more I think about it, Old Billy was right
Let's kill all the lawyers, kill 'em tonight
You don't want to work, you want to live like a king
But the big, bad world doesn't owe you a thing

Get over it
Get over it
If you don't want to play, then you might as well split
Get over it, Get over it

It's like going to confession every time I hear you speak
You're makin' the most of your losin' streak
Some call it sick, but I call it weak

You drag it around like a ball and chain
You wallow in the guilt; you wallow in the pain
You wave it like a flag, you wear it like a crown
Got your mind in the gutter, bringin' everybody down
Complain about the present and blame it on the past
I'd like to find your inner child and kick its little ass

Get over it
Get over it
All this bitchin' and moanin' and pitchin' a fit
Get over it, get over it

Get over it
Get over it
It's gotta stop sometime, so why don't you quit
Get over it, get over it

and as of today one of the principals of the heroic stories she like to promote has spoken out indicating he felt used. It seems Oprah calls him her favorite guest and has continually run clips of him and his sister grieving their mother and it has never been a benefit to him in any way, even emotionally. He implies he was a child who was manipulated for her gain, and she still is doing it .His sister was the one who told the story about sharing a bowl of cheerios with their dying mother causing Oprah to create the term "cheerio moment" and running their image continuously.

73. KnR. I'm glad he shared his birthday dinner with her.
Surprise, the press was reporting earlier that it was going to be a boys' night out. Wonder how they're going to spin this.

81. What happened to the long suffering, invisible Stedman?
Edited on Fri Aug-06-10 06:26 AM by cornermouse
I don't see him.

Oprah has traveled a long way since she first began on tv. Its probably worth remembering that people's goals change over the years and that the Oprah who exists now is quite different from the Oprah of 24 years ago.

One other thing. Its worth remembering that not everyone on the planet thinks identically and sings the same song with one voice. Historically speaking, attempts to force others into a mold are doomed to fail.

Chicago not appreciating Oprah enough. He's currently heading a project to erect an Oprah Statue of Liberty off the shores of Lake Michigan.

91. Oprah's okay. Obama's cute.
But somehow a couple of rich people smoozing and congratulating each other on how cool they are while America crumbles just creeps me out. Our fascination with the rich and famous, as if they were somehow above the rest of us just makes me tired.

Anyway. Happy birthday. The elderly lady I deliver meals to twice a week had a birthday Saturday. I took her a cake. We talked. Sort of the same . . . sort of.

93. Oprah can suck it
especially after her show in 2009, telling people they can save money when they go out to eat by only tipping their server 10% .

96. This is what bothers me about Oprah
with her zombie like followers she could have used her program as a way to educate them about issues. Instead she fills their heads with feel good pablum that does nothing but reenforce the "I'm the only one that matters; greed is good" attitudes too many Americans have had since Reagan told them the same crap.

133. Your criticism is unfounded simply because politics is not
the platform or theme of her show. Her intent is to reach out to the masses with her "feel good" messages and IT SELLS!! Bottom line. You can't blame her b/c there's a sucker born every minute. Like so many others before her, she simply capitalized on what people obviously wanted and needed. You can't blame her for being a success!!

137. Using your logic
criticism of O'Reilly or Beck would also be "unfounded" - they're just telling people what they want to hear too. - And you can't blame them for being a success.

Educating her audience about issues would not necessarily mean giving every show a political theme. Some issues, like health care for 9/11 Responders, are (or should be) beyond politics. I have a hard time respecting someone with her kind of influence who does not use it at least occasionally for the greater good.

144. It's not 'my' logic, it's simply, logical and don't try to spin what
I wrote. Crticism of Limbaugh, O'Reilly or any other political commentator couldn't possibly be "unfounded," unless it was a lie. These people have a political forum upon which their shows are based. There is no way in hell anyone can compare a talk show host like Oprah, Letterman or Leno to political pundits like Beck or O'Reilly. Two entirely different genres.
