Progressives have EVERY reason to be filled with energy to DEFEAT REPUBLICANS in November.
Edited on Wed Aug-04-10 11:28 AM by RBInMaine
"Progressive" means making PROGRESS. It doesn't mean ideological purity, and it doesn't mean snatching defeat from the jaws of PROGRESS. November is about defeating the dangerous, horrendous,
TeaRadical RePUKElicans. THAT is what it is about! It is about continuing PROGRESS in the right direction or going BACKWARD to the horrid Bush/Cheney nightmare policies of the recent past. Please do not allow people to suffer from amnesia. Progressives (and the ENTIRE country) now have PROGRESS with Dems and Obama. Here is some:

1) Combat operations in Iraq ENDING - 90,000 fewer troops there - COMPLETELY out within a year
2) Lilly Leadbetter Fair Pay Law
3) Expanded SCHIP Law for kids healthcare
4) Reproductive Choice blocks removed
5) Stimulus bill that created or saved MILLIONS of jobs with working/middle class tax cuts and the largest investment in green energy EVER
6) Saved THOUSANDS of auto industry jobs with the loans being repaid, and new and better products being made HERE in America
7) PROGRESS with the healthcare bill to lower costs, increase access, saves BILLIONS in waste and abuse, and also makes college loans more affordable and available to hundreds of thousands of students
8) PROGRESS with the Wall St. reform bill to reign in the worst practices and increase oversight
9) A new law to better protect people frm crime on our Native American reservations
10) A new law to decrease marketing of tobacco products to kids
11) TWO EXCELLENT WOMEN appointed to the Supreme Court
12) Fighting the anti-immigrant law in Arizona
13) A targeted tax credit law to spur job creation especially in small business
14) Fighting like hell to pass another small business jobs bill centered on increasing small business lending
15) FINALLY an unemployment insurance extention bill passed (no thanks to the RePUKES)
16) Dems and Obama are opposed to extending tax cuts for the richest 2% of greedy filthy fat cats who don't need them and which don't create a single job.

17) ***** And just today, FINALLY (again, no thanks to RePUKES), an extension stimulus bill has cloture and is moving forward to save hundreds of thousands teacher and public safety jobs as states struggle with their budgets.

We have OBAMA and DEMOCRATS to thank for all of this, with the ReSCUMlican Party fighting us with lies and abuse of procedure to block us every single step of the way. How could anyone even contemplate not getting the hell out there and working like hell to preserve our congressional majorities? We got hit with the worst recession since the 30's thanks to Bush and RePUKES, they have married themselves to the horrid TeaRacists, and they handed Obama and Dems a massive shitpile to clean up. And what is their plan? To go right straight back to deregulating Wall St., massive tax cuts for the filthy rich, gutting Social Security and Medicare, and repealing healthcare. Want that? If not, get the hell out there and work like hell to DEFEAT REPUKELICANS ! (I am canvassing again today !)

1. How about independents? Can you convince them they have EVERY reason to defeat Republicans
this November? Because getting the independent vote is what elected Obama. Convince them to support Democrats and the victory is assured. Good luck with that, though.

2. Yes, absolutely. We do it by ATTACKING the RePUKES like hell on their horrid BACKWARD ideas and
as the TEA-RADICAL extremists that they are. Do this LOUD, CLEAR, and OFTEN and it resonates with the Indies. It is already working in MANY races around the country. Indies are thoughtful. They don't like Tea Party radicalism, and they don't want to go back to Bush policies. They are just frustrated in general right now with government, the recession is exacerbating this frustration, and they are impatient for a much lower unemployment rate. (Remember, the Great Depression lasted 12 years. This was almost as bad. It won't end overnight. BUT, we are at least inching ahead in the right direction.) They need to be reminded of the extent of the recession, that RePUKE policies caused it, and that the PUKES want to go back to the very thing that caused it all.

The main point of my post is that progressives (like me) have far more cause to be motivated to get out and campaign for Dems than are saying they have. Christ, it is a no-brainer when you look at the RePUKES, their cast of radical candidates, what they are doing, and what they plan to do if they return to power. An absolute NO BRAINER.

6. You're so right. The problem will not be with liberals because at the end of the day,
liberals will come home as we alway do... are always *expected* to.

The problem is with white men who identify as Independents. In my view, these people are really Republicans who are embarrassed by George Bush, but they STILL are Republicans in "Independent" or "Libertarian" cloned.

Gotta target them with the effective attacks against the radical GOP that I've described.

12. Sorry, as a liberal, I don't fall in line and take my ............
ass kicking by people claiming to be on the liberal side.

It is true that I will vote for my House Rep, but I am not going to vote for my Senator. I find it impossible for someone who holds so many conservative viewpoints just because they have D in front of their name.

Good thing there is always a left leaning third party option in my state.

13. I hear you. I guess I'm quite lucky because I"m in Van Hollen's district and live in one of the
most progressive areas in the country. I did vote for Nader in 1996 and 2000, so I don't walk in lockstep, either. However, I do live in Maryland, so that factors in as well.

helped Bush.

42. If you read my post, I clearly stated that I VOTE IN MARYLAND!! That means
that I didn't waste my votes, sweetie! Gore would have won Maryland regardless of my vote so it didn't help Bush. He got his ass kicked in Maryland. It was a protest vote.

It is my right to vote for whomever I want. For you to be condescending and trash my right is very wingnut of you. You don't have a right to tell me what to do with my vote. It is still America, not Wingnutville.

46. So, let me get this straight. .............
Gore lost by less than 600 votes. Three left leaning parties in Florida garnished more than 600 votes, yet only Nader is responsible because Gore couldn't persuade 600 people from three left leaning parties to vote for him?

Gore failed to convince people he was the best choice, but it's Nader's fault.

Interesting logic, you have.

why anyone who isn't among the most wealthy would want to go back to GoP rule. Their policies benefit the most wealthy at the expense of the overwhelming majority of US citizens.

Even independents should prefer progressives because at least their policies are friendly to the poor and middle class as well as being more fair.

35. Our problem is that we don't know how to use fear.

Progressives tend, naturally, to be progressive. To think about the world in terms of enlightenment rationality, to believe that honest civil debate is best.

While that may all be true there are now physiological reasons to be sure that fear is the single most powerful human motivator. The limbic brain responds without reason. Reason, if given the chance may come later, but for many people it frequently does not.

It hurts to say it, but we must pound it in over and over and over that the Right is simply downright terrifying. Everytime we refuse to match fear with fear the narrative of the Right gains ground.
