1. I'm not understanding
why she just can't continue the job she had. I feel like I missed something here.

They failed to stand by her when she was accused of racism - BY RACISTS

9. What are you talking about?
What does this have to do with her retaining her original job, why a different one? Does she not want it back, is it eliminated, filled already?
It's obvious what they did to her but what does that have to do with the offering of a different position and not the same one?
Personally I'd like to see her in Vilsack's place.

13. Because MonSatan shill Tom VilSuck didn't approve of how she was doing her job.
She was being a decent public servant, and helping family farmers, which is exactly what the department of Agriculture should do. But it's not what MonSatan wants. They consider family farmers (and those who help them) to be the "enemy".

We need to hear her voice and they want to silence it.

7. Good for her
She is now poised for much bigger and better things if she chooses.

This could actually be one of the better things to happen to her in the long-run. This is obviously a very thoughtful, intelligent and gifted woman who has devoted her life and career to improving the lives of others. And now, as a result of the right wing's ugliness, the media's cravenness and the administration's and NAACP's thoughtlessness, she now has an opportunity to expand her outreach and good works to a much broader field.

I say GO for it, Ms. Sherrod - the world needs you!

10. I'm guessing she will end up as head of the NAACP.
God knows they need a new leader.

I can not even imagine the texting, emailing, and phone conversations that are going on among the leading AA of this country. They are probably planning an informal summit to review their mission and get a handle on the embarrassment that is Ben Jealous. I would say that at this moment one of their greatest problems is alienation of black females.

The women get it. Do the men?

11. I don't think Ben Jealous is an embarrassment at all.
Edited on Thu Jul-22-10 11:59 AM by Empowerer
He's a very effective leader. He made a serious mistake in this instance, but he certainly wasn't alone.

FYI, the NAACP is not the only place where a woman of Ms. Sherrod's caliber and character can make a difference.

And, by the way, I sincerely doubt that the "leading AAs" are having summits, formal or informal all over the country - any more than "leading white people" are. We stopped having "secret colored people meetings" back in the early 70s. :-)

P.S. The NAACP's chair of the board is a black woman.

12. I like Ben but this mistake could have been easily avoided with a little time in the archives.
Its just too bad.

What's with the "secret" thing. I made no such assertion.

14. I agree that it's a mistake, but in the scheme of things, it's a blip
Edited on Thu Jul-22-10 12:35 PM by Empowerer
It's certainly not enough to fire the president of the organization over. People in these positions make mistakes. Interestingly, it probably wasn't Ben's mistake, directly. He likely relied on his staff to tell him what was going on, to write the statement and he authorized it to go out based on what he had been told. But he acknowledged the mistake and apologized for it - he didn't blame anyone or throw anyone on his staff under the bus. I think he showed real leadership in this matter.

If the standard for an organization's leader is that they never make a mistake, we'll never have any dynamic forward-thinking leadership since everyone would be entirely too cautious to ever do anything. That's if we could ever find anyone to accept a leadership role since we are all fallible and make mistakes, so that bar would be set pretty high.

The "secret thing" was a joke - hence the smiley face . . .

15. Is there a problem with spelling her name correctly? More from CNN

Obama talks with USDA employee forced out of her job

(CNN) -- Shirley Sherrod got her wish Thursday -- a conversation with President Barack Obama about her forced resignation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The president's office sent Sherrod a text message indicating that Obama had been trying to get in touch with her, Sherrod told CNN producer Julie O'Neill.

Sherrod said she called the White House and was given another number to call. She dialed that number a few minutes later and spoke with the president.

According to O'Neill, Sherrod declined to have the phone call videotaped by CNN, but she was "very pleased" with the conversation.

21. Vilsack & NAACP screwed up, BUT the REAL ASSHOLE who needs to be sued is that SCUMBAG right winger
who libeled himself in this. THEY are the REAL scum here, and THEY need to be sued and attacked. At least Vilsack and the NAACP fessed up that they screwed up, have apologized, and are trying to make amends. What is the right wing scumbag doing? Apologizing? No way. He is gloating.
Let's train the fire correctly here.
