Obama to promote electric vehicles in Michigan
President Barack Obama travels to Michigan on Thursday to promote investments in the electric vehicle battery industry, a sector the administration sees as a bright spot in the sagging recovery.
Obama will attend a groundbreaking ceremony for a plant that will manufacture advanced batteries for Chevrolet and Ford electric cars. The Compact Power plant in Holland, Mich., is the ninth factory to begin construction following the $2.4 billion investment in advanced batteries and electric vehicles Obama announced last August.
An Energy Department report to be released Thursday says the investments will increase U.S. production of advanced batteries from 2 percent to 40 percent of the world's supply by 2015, creating thousands of jobs along the way.
"We're going to build these products in America," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Wednesday. "We're going to employ Americans. I think that's a strong economic record."

1. Do internet content providers *REALLY* need to generate mile-long URLs?
On top of that, the URLs are sometimes changed on what seems an hourly basis, making links obsolete in no time flat. It's almost as if these websites that compile news stories are deliberately trying to obfuscate anything resembling a permanent link to their content.

Now that I've vented on that topic...

I'm pleased at this news, as I believe electric vehicles are inevitable. Why not invest in this sector and begin creating economies of scale before other nations fill the void and begin selling these vehicles to Americans? Besides, the industrial infrastructure and trained workforce are already in-place in Michigan, so it's a logical choice for this new wave of manufacturing. It's cheaper to retool than to build from scratch, after all.

2. That seems to be something with Yahoo News, don't ask me why
but to answer the question, no they don't need to be that long.

As for electric cars I am thinking plug in hybrids is a better way to start and let that lead into full electric as the infrastructure and battery tech improves.

3. This is the ninth battery plant
There will be 25 total and they will produce 40% of the world's car batteries by 2015, at a third of the cost.

4. Net Recommendation - Zero
I thought I would see if anybody else had commented and then remembered I forgot to recommend this thread that has zero recommends.

Well now I see why. Crazy, unrecommending a thread about the environment, jobs, making things in America, and getting off fossil fuels. And they call themselves progressive.

8. It's odd
My guess is it's people who hate the US automakers since the company will make batteries for GM and Ford. Also, the plant is in MI, the home of the US automakers.

6. Net recommends back to zero
The fucking clowns who have taken up residence here - with an apparent agenda to negate anything positive associated with the Obama administration - will be the ruination of DU. Tolerate them at your own risk, admins & mods!

10. Sorry ... but I had to unrec this post for an obvious reason ....
This electric battery plant does NOTHING to add a public option to the HCR bill, NOTHING to accelerate the end of DADT, NOTHING to get us out of Afghanistan faster ... nor does it reflect sufficient anger at BP, or help to plug that gulf oil leak.

Bottom line: Its simply unacceptable!!!!
