Gingrich says he's considering a presidential run
DES MOINES, Iowa — Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich says he's considering running for president in 2012 and expects to make a decision by early next year.

In an interview Monday with The Associated Press, Gingrich predicted a Republican would defeat Democratic President Barack Obama in 2012. He called Obama a "disaster" who would go down as the worst president in modern times.

1. Perhaps A REPUBLICAN will beat him, but YOU won't Newt.
I don't really like him much either, but you are off by an administration if you are looking for the WORST.

cause for concern?

13. But they always forgive their aldulterers, and ethics don't seem
to be a high priority for them. He's been sounding pretty whack lately, maybe he'll appeal to those who aren't as far gone as the teabaggers.

I think it just kind of alarmed me because I know he's been speaking out lately and worse, he's getting air time and being quoted. I hadn't even heard his name in years, so I was surprised he's rearing his ugly head.

It'll be interesting to see what happens.

19. He's very conservative and the author of the Contract for America
You would think that a man who divorced his wife - telling her while she was still hospitalized after being told she had cancer - would be not welcome in polite society - but Republicans are hypocrites. Can you imagine what the Republicans would say of a man like this? What of a mother running while many of her children were young and one an infant with Down's syndrome - and with a 17 year daughter, who was pregnant. Even more innocent things are accepted from a Republican that they would blast in a Democrat - can you imagine what would be said if the junior Senator from MA, who both posed in the nude and was credibly said to have worn pink leather shorts as an adult were a Democrat?

14. Well, at least Newt Gingrich is consistent.
He's been wrong about everything so far, and now he's sure a Republican is out there who can defeat President Obama. Okay, Newtie. Divorce your current wife yet?

15. He's just increasing his marketing. He has no plans to run.
He says this every couple of years. It brings him bigger and more speaking fees and keeps him in the public eye, plus it gives him more influence in the RNC platform, since he will attract a decent following and can broker his followers to the highest bidder.

Gingrich isn't stupid enough to believe he has a chance. He's old, he's physically not attractive, and he's got more sex scandals than years in public service. While none of those should disqualify him, he knows they are all negatives he can't overcome, especially considering how many times he's condemned Democrats for sex scandals.

17. In other news, 2 years before the real election, people just say "I'm running"
14 years out of politics and annoying liberals and writing on toilet paper, will Gingrich have enough of a zombie following to win a primary? Probably not.

Still waiting on state governors Sarah Palin, Mark Sanford, Mitch Daniels, and Tim Pawlenty. (BTW, Sanford has served in the US House, and Daniels in the Bush White House)

18. He considered it in 2008 too. But decided (when low interest) that he was needed at his think tank
He is a bright guy - serious - but TOTALLY unlikable. He is also far too conservative with too long a record to hide.

His best point i that he is an outstanding debater. I watched the debate he had on climate change with Kerry. He likely could have beaten nearly any other Democrat - if not all of them. In spite of past statements that were skeptical - he immediately took the center by saying that cc was real and agreeing when Kerry asked that it was man made.

This pushed the debate totally on economics - and how to deal with the problem. Kerry, a member of the Finance committee, who was involved with how acid rain was dealt with the entire history on climate change was able to beat him - even on his own turf.

My point is that this was expected to be a debate where the issue should have been science vs Inhoffe style rants. Gingrich, an economics professor moved the debate from what Kerry likely expected and prepared for and he moved it to his area of expertise.

The biggest problem is that it is harder to get more likable than the Obamas - or less so than Gingrich.

26. I think Gingrich's call on Obama is indication that
his judgment for a presidential campaign is an example of a guy who thinks way, way too much of himself.

His chances don't look good to me. He's fussy and aristocratic. What is he going to tell Iowa Republican caucus-goers -- that he's a man of the fields, a guy who knows his pig farms, a Hawkeyes fan from way back, a man of the people, a folksy titan who deserves to live in the White House, someone who represents core moral values of family and community?

It just doesn't add up. Newt's a legend in his own mind who has only the faintest connection to middle America, to working people, to farmers, and so forth.

It would be fun to print up several thousand bumper stickers a month or two before the Iowa caucuses that read "MEGALOMANIACS FOR GINGRICH."
