Obama IS a Democrat, and FDR IS a Democrat
Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 06:20 PM by SunsetDreams
To try to compare one over the other would be that you would have to slam a Democrat.

They both have unique qualities to their leadership styles.

Were there some mistakes in FDR's presidency? Yes, no one is perfect. However FDR had a lot of great successes too.
Are there some mistakes in Obama's presidency? Yes, again, no one is perfect. However again, Obama, has had, and will continue to have a lot of great successes.

I am sure there are several things in Obama's presidency that mirror FDR's presidency, hence all the comparitive articles out there. HOWEVER, it doesn't mean they are in anyway saying Obama IS FDR. I am sure if we looked back over the decades and centuries, we might find a President that we can compare Obama to in a certain circumstance. It never means it's a whole, but a part. As far as Democrats go, in general you will find many more comparisons, while taking into account the Presidencies are occuring in different times, and under different circumstances, ie, how much is on their plate when they take office, whether their party has a majority (and even how much of one), in order to get legislation passed. It also depends on whats going on domestically as well as on the World stage.

I value FDR's Presidency, he is and was a Democrat.
I value Obama's Presidency he is a Democrat.
I am a Democrat.
I know both of these men hold closer to my values.

3. Pres Obama's presidency is a work in progress.
It isn't possible to compare it to the sum of an entire presidency and historical record. Those anxious to declare him a failure will have to wait for the final score.

16. FDR is nothing like Hoover and
neither is President Obama.

Still, both Obama and FDR had to deal with policies left in place by their predecessors. It's clear the Emergengy Banking Act was such a policy.

28. coomparing the two is absolutely ridiculous and idiotic
As a history buff who's favorite time to read about is from 1900 to WWII. Fascinating.
I also, long ago in my 20s decided that FDR was my hero.

However, to compare FDR and Obama is stupid

The eras are so different. the press is different and the public is different.
FDR also had the good name of TR in the public's mind.

Today we have a press that is doing double down in their lapdog coverage of Bush by trashing Obama on double duty,
24-7 news cycle and the first black man as president.
The gop went insane and off the rails in 2008 and revels in its crazy.

there is no way to compare two very different men who come from totally different family backgrounds (FDR grew up in a mansion while Obama was in an apartment and in a foreign country) and eras.

Our society is one of immature and spoiled brats who think everything is like a television drama and demands everything to be done this minute. In FDR's time the grown ups were grown up and understood that things do not change overnight. They knew that the depression would not be solved in a matter of months.. Today, if things are not shangra-la in two months we write them off as disappointments and failures.
We demand our president now be psychiatrist and daddy and mommy. Back then, you never expected a president to play action figure

30. Saying FDR and Obama are both Deocrats
is like saying Lincoln and Bush are both Republicans. It's only correct on the surface. Both parties have changed, both have moved to the right. Nixon was more left than Obama is now, and he was a Republican. Obama does not represent the Democratic party that I grew up in.

31. So you are saying he is not a Democrat?
As for Nixon, what is up with that meme around here lately? Nixon was not liberal. Did he have some liberal legislation come through? Yes, but you want to know what that is? He had a Democratically controlled congress. Please spare with the comparison of Obama and Nixon, I am not buying it.

34. Obama is more Center and tings of Center-Right.
Obama has shown he will appease the right consistently and if an issue arises that does not involve big money he and the WH will not fight against it...At best Obama is center in a country where Center is what was defined as "Far-Right" in the Regan era.

36. George Wallace was a Democrat too, what value is in the label?
If that's all you got then forget about it.

There is no magic in the title but in values, actions, and who's interests are served.

I'll take Teddy Roosevelt over most Democrats alive in the situations we face with corporate capture today.

Chanting someone being a Democrat is functionally irrelevant, whose side they are on is pertinent.
