2. His drug conviction as a Princeton undergrad ought to annoy
them as well. But, he got elected twice in Indiana.

4. As a resident of Indiana...
... I must reiterate the saying "not to underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers."

5. The key phrase in your post......
Edited on Sun Jun-20-10 10:25 AM by Proud Liberal Dem
"in Indiana". His shtick works well here in Indiana but I should point out that we had a pretty steady stream of Democratic governors since the 1990's (Bayh, O'Bannon), so it was pretty inevitable that the Republicans would win back the Governor's Mansion at some point. How well Daniels would play outside of Indiana remains to be seen, although I suppose he's not quite as crazy as some Republicans (which is probably why he wouldn't be very successful in the GOP in places like, say, the South). He's got all the right "talking points" memorized when it comes to the economy but seems more moderate on social issues. In fact, he signed an executive order prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity immediately upon taking office and he has never supported the attempted constitutional ban on same-sex marriage being pushed by fundies here in Indiana every session. Interestingly, he won re-election in 2008 rather handily even as Obama was elected President with Indiana turning blue in a Presidential election for the first time in 40 years.

6. In all honesty, would we like it if a Democrat Gov. said what he said?
He said in light of the current crises our nation is facing, both sides call a “truce” on some divisive social issues until we insure our very survival. We'd be calling for a primary if a Democrat Gov. or Obama said anything like that. Compromising on social issues? I think not!

13. Only the minority Dum-dums on DU would say that.
However, I don't think he was even calling for a compromise per say. He was mainly stating rather well that we need to realize we're in this together. No one is an enemy here and yet those on his side claim there are enemies more so than the left. However he's rather trying to safely lay blame on both sides.

In effect what he did and say is what the right, such as Palin, Coulter, Beck and Fox News have said about Obama dealing with the international world. Obama apologizes for America's actions. And this is the real problem for them. Daniels is in effect "apologizing" to the left for the actions of the right which is too similar to Obama. He basically shot any promotion in the current Republican atmosphere with that.

14. He isn't calling for a compromise...
...just a temporary cease fire until we get the ship righted.

9. At some point, a split has to occur
Eventually, Republicans like Daniels are going to try to reclaim the GOP and the ultra-right will split off.

12. Try is the operative word here and fail. Remember they are rapidly becoming the minority.
Most of his Repub colleagues have given into every demand of the extreme right.
