9 GM plants skip summer shutdown due to demand

Good news for our investment in General Motors: GM will keep 9 of its 11 U.S. assembly plants open all summer -- skipping the usual two-week shutdown for maintenance and tooling changes -- to cut waiting time for dealers and customers to get their vehicles. The company also said it will increase its number of temporary workers.

The result will be increase of production of 56,000 vehicles over the summer. North American chief Mark Reuss cited high for such vehicles as the Buick LaCrosse sedan and Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia crossovers. Given their government control, there was no reason to startle the horses in the street by noting they also also can't make enough Tahoes and Yukons at the Texas plant.

Plants that will stay open June 28 to July 9: Arlington, Texas; Bowling Green, Ky.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; Hamtramck, Mich., Kansas City, Kan.; Flint, Mich.; Delta Township, Mich.; Lansing, Mich.; and Wentzville, Mo.

Toyota hiring 2,000 as work resumes on Blue Springs, Miss., plant

In a huge sign of recovery in the auto industry, Toyota just announced it is resuming construction of its Blue Springs, Miss., plant and hiring 2,000 workers.

Toyota said: "This decision to begin production with Corolla enables (the plant) to open as quickly as possible. Also, by beginning production with Corolla, nearly all Corolla for this market will be built in North America." Some of the Corollas for the U.S. and Canadian market have been built in Japan since April.
