Whatever this president says or does, it does not matter
In his 18 minutes speech he tried to be concise and to the point, yet some say he did not give enough details.

Had his speech lasted 36 minutes, details included, he would have been accused of giving too many details.

This is getting ridiculous. We are not to walk in lockstep with our president, like the republicans did with Bush, always finding a reason or an excuse, but we should at least take the good thing, appreciate, thank God McCain and Palin did not win, and then towards the end say "maybe it would have been a bit better if..."

This guy is one of the smartest president we ever had and his presidency is at once of the hardest times in our history.

Wars, jobs, healthcare and now this crap, in less than 2 years.

Seriously, people, stop acting like children or like old farts, complaining there's not enough salt or too much of it.

You're all driving me insane.

11. Oh you're right. I remember someone in the media complaining about him "lecturing"
during Health fight. The guy really cannot win. The good news is that the so-called "liberals" aren't that big a chunk of the electorate according to Gallup. The pragmatists and concensus builders will win in the end.

2. Pretty much
Before the speech I posted that no matter what he said it would not be enough.

Can some critic of this speech tell me how Johnny Mac and Bible Spice would have done better? Jphnny Mac would have been bombing Iran by now and Bible Spice would be babbling about praying for the Gulf victims, :puke:

The criticism of Obama is beyond absurd. I don't agree with him on several things but I think he is doing the best he can with this mess.

6. McCain and Palin would have nuked it by now
and they would be surprised at the radiation fall out in the region. That's what we would be living with.

44. Actually, there would be NO fallout in the traditional sense.
With the proper size of fission bomb, say 20 kilotons, about the size of the test detonation at Trinity/Alamogordo, at a mile down and where the water pressure is 2200 lbs/sq inch, wouldn't even reach the atmosphere.

There would be radioactivity in the water, of course, and no guarantee that the explosion would stop the geyser, although many scientists have concluded it is likely that it would.

But let's face it, the immediate effects aren't why this approach hasn't been more seriously considered, even though the Russians recommended it during the last week of April -- the real reason is because this approach would render this drill site unusable for decades.

49. The real reasons are the signficant risk of a radioactive oil spill (rather than the one we have)...
and the geopolitical ramifications of detonating a nuclear device at a time when we're demanding others to stop developing them.

5. I like this reaction from First Read..
"As we wrote in First Read this morning, Obama's objectives tonight were to demonstrate to the public that his administration is doing everything possible to mitigate the spill’s impact, to reimburse Gulf residents, and to hold BP’s feet to the fire.

In a strong, resolute and, yes, optimistic tone, he hit on all three."

Not only that he demonstrated strong compassion for what they're going through.

he is the fucking president. OF COURSE WHAT HE SAYS AND DOES MATTERS. If it didn't, we wouldn't need him. He'd be just a figurehead, a bow ornament.

When he does right, he's important, and when he doesn't do right, he's not?

It's about the difference between Obama and the kind of leader we need right now. Obama has the talent and brains to be that leader, but for some reason he's choosing not to.

My thoughts exactly. I donated and voted for the guy, was an ardent supporter, but more and more Obama is looking like that one kid everyone always says is "full of potential" but who, for some weird unknown reason, just won't get out there and fulfill it. This guy has enormous reserves of intelligence and diplomacy and power, and yet....every fucking decision he makes is so puzzlingly impotent.

25. and some of us say what we want and what we'll settle for and stick to it
My goalpost stay the same and even come closer sometimes. Like on health care, when my acceptable line was way more minimal than almost every eventual die hard supporter. Hell, I lowered my bar and we still couldn't get there so I don't get why folks don't understand why anyone would be surprised when I finally called bullshit when we couldn't even get a national exchange, anti-trust exemptions removed, and refrain from taxing benefits.

I think it is wacky to see the same positions over and over and then accuse people of moving the goalposts or claiming that whatever is said and done is irrelevant when what and said is the problem.

90% of what I call for is largely ignored and the rest declared non-pragmatic or whatever the meme of the day is.

Thou protesteth too much on this, methinks.

Being handed a shit sandwich makes it harder to get the things done you want to get done. That and a goose-stepping opposition party and a carping "I want what I want--screw the nearly insurmountable mountain you have to climb to get it done and everyone else--I want what I want now" tantrum throwing base.

The carping and whining on this site, and a hell of a lot of others and in both the left and right media is getting old. Cynicism and pout-rage is not going to get anything done and is vastly more likely to be counterproductive. It's easy to stand on the sidelines and criticize. It's much harder to be a part of the solution.

It's like a nation of 2-year-olds. And it's coming from everywhere. It just needs to stop. This country has spiraled into one big snowballing pity party.
