3. Random tidbit:
There is speculation that the reason (or one of) that he hasn't given an address from the Oval before is that the powers that be thought he looked too skinny behind the desk.

Yep, saw it on Twitter (from a member of the press pool.)

We shall see.....

14. It's better that the speech is kept under wraps.
Keeps the blogosphere from crapping itself until after it's made--plus, if "The West Wing" was an accurate indication, there are edits being made up until minutes before the President goes on the air.

I wish this spill had never happened.

That said, having lived through many presidents, and knowing that none of them including Obama have a magic wand, I am still grateful that this man is our president now who will see us through this disaster. And I am no pollyanna - a real cynic about most things, so I don't say this lightly.

I will not always like what he says, or agree with him on every point. That is fine with me - this is a big country with many points of view and expectations. All I ask is that he continue to use his best efforts and best judgment, and I believe that he tries his best to do so every day.

53. He's being a complete idiot. Says we should have 10's of thousands of people go to the Gulf
right now to do cleanup for as long as it takes. And this gem of wisdom is followed by Keith Olberman saying that the next story up is how sick cleanup workers, fisherman, etc are becoming being around this stuff.

Chris used to do Peace Corp stuff - he needs to put on a hazmat suit and lead the charge, instead of just telling others to put their health at risk at this point.

50. +1 excerpt, NYTimes:
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 08:20 PM by tiptoe

...
Tomorrow, I will meet with the chairman of BP and inform him that he is to set aside whatever resources are required to compensate the workers and business owners who have been harmed as a result of his company's recklessness.

And this fund will not be controlled by BP.

In order to ensure that all legitimate claims are paid out in a fair and timely manner, the account must and will be administered by an independent, third party.

In Oval Office Speech, Obama Presses BP on Compensation — SHERYL GAY STOLBERG
NY Times:, June 15, 2010

WASHINGTON — President Obama told the nation Tuesday night that he would instruct BP officials “set aside whatever resources are required to compensate the workers and business owners” harmed by the Gulf oil spill, and he named Navy Secretary Ray Mabus to develop a long-range plan to “restore the unique beauty and bounty of this region.”

During his first Oval Office address to the nation, Mr. Obama said he had asked Secretary Mabus, a former Mississippi governor, to consult with states, local communities, tribes, fisherman, business owners and conservationists to develop a plan as quickly as possible.

“Make no mistake: we will fight this spill with everything we’ve got for as long it takes,” Mr. Obama said. “We will make BP pay for the damage their company has caused. And we will do whatever’s necessary to help the Gulf Coast and its people recover from this tragedy.”
...
“The consequences of our inaction are now in plain sight,” Mr. Obama said, adding, “Each day, we send nearly $1 billion of our wealth to foreign countries for their oil. And today, as we look to the Gulf, we see an entire way of life being threatened by a menacing cloud of black crude.”

Mr. Obama has faced withering criticism that his administration did not react quickly enough to the spill, and he used the speech — and the solemn setting of the Oval Office — to argue that the cleanup effort has been massive: 30,000 workers across four states and thousands of ships in the Gulf. He said he had authorized the deployment of more than 17,000 members of the National Guard to “help stop the oil from coming ashore, clean beaches, train response workers, or even help with processing claims.
