http://news.cincinnati.com/comments/article/AB/20100609/NEWS0108/6100351/John-Boehner-benefits-from-lobbyist-tiesHouse Republican Leader John Boehner's close relationship with Washington lobbyists has paid off in campaign donations, according to a report released Wednesday by the Center for Public Integrity.
Boehner was the GOP's main liaison to the business community in the 1990s when the West Chester Republican served as Republican Conference chairman under former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga.
Back then, Boehner created the "Thursday Group," a weekly strategy meeting with conservative and business lobbyists and trade associations, including representatives of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He maintained close ties to many in lobbying and business circles through his so-called "K Street Cabinet."
The Center for Public Integrity, a nonpartisan watchdog group, studied two decades worth of finance reports from Boehner's campaign committees, as well as donations to The Freedom Project, a political action committee he runs.
The group found that over his congressional career, lobbyists and business interests were among the top donors to Boehner, who took in more than $30 million in campaign cash during that time.
