The powerhouse Service Employees International Union — which, with other labor groups, tried unsuccessfully to oust Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) in Tuesday’s primary — isn’t pledging its support for Lincoln in her November general election against Republican John Boozman.
“We'll see if Blanche Lincoln is made a better senator for having to answer to working Arkansans over these past few weeks. And if you are
Larry Kissell (N.C.-08) or Zack Space (Ohio-18) or Mike McMahon (N.Y.-13) or Michael Arcuri (N.Y.-24) or another candidate who stopped advocating for the needs of working families once elected, the labor movement is going to be at the side of those voters who demand change,” said SEIU national political director Jon Youngdahl.
Earlier Wednesday, a White House official told POLITICO that labor “flushed” $10 million down the drain supporting Democratic Lt. Gov. Bill Halter against Lincoln, cash that could have been better spent protecting endangered incumbents across the country.
Halter’s backers on the left were unrepentant. Blogger Markos Moulitsas, a Halter supporter who predicted his victory at a progressive conference in Washington on Monday, wrote: “Unfortunately, the smart political move lost. So say hello to Sen. John Boozman, the next senator from the great state of Arkansas. It's the political reality. No need to sugarcoat it.”
