BRILLIANT! Pelosi forces vote on Tax Cuts for Job Outsourcers
Speaker Pelosi pulled a brilliant move at the end of the last weeks legislative session.

House Democrats are home for a long Memorial Day break with a gift-wrapped wedge issue delivered just in time for district campaigning. One of their final actions before adjourning late Friday was passing a measure that would strip tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas by a 215-204 vote.

talkingpointsmemo.com

The Grand Outsourcing Party. Expect Dems to run on this come election time.

More brilliance below the fold.

MinistryOfTruth's diary :: ::
That's right, in the pursuit of that shiny object of tax cuts for Corporations (even Corporations that outsource jobs!) every Republican House Rep except Joesph Cao of Louisiana and the average 35 Blue Dogs decided that companies that outsource jobs amidst near 10% unemployment is more of something we MUST have, and they MUST be rewarded with tax cuts!

As speaker Pelosi said recently . . .

"In this legislation, which is job creating, it closes the loophole which has allowed businesses to ship jobs overseas. Can you believe that we have a tax policy that enables outsourcing? So, if you have one thing to say about this bill to your constituents, you can say that today, you voted to close the loophole to ship US jobs overseas and giving businesses a tax break to do so," House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi told the lawmakers before the voting process started on Friday last week. "It is not right. It will be corrected today."

The proposal, expected to cost nearly $112 billion, will be discussed by the Senate during week of June 7 after Congress’ Memorial Day recess.

crooksandliars.com

Seizing on the win in the Special Election for PA-12, Democratic Leadership has decided that outsourcing is the wedge issue voters are going to care about more than social issues, and it is a good bet in my book.

And Democratic strategists agree.

Democratic campaign types are thrilled with the timing of the vote, saying the outsourcing issue gives candidates the perfect platform to repeat Mark Critz's successful campaign that helped him win the special election in Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional district earlier this month. One Democrat said the Republican opposition to addressing outsourcing "will be a clear line in the sand" that members are being asked to highlight back home next week.

"They are voting against jobs," the Democrat said in a preview of television attack ads and pressure campaigns Republicans can expect this week.

talkingpointsmemo.com

Whether this bill makes it through the Senate is not certain, but either way, it is a win/win. If the bill passes the Senate the tax incentive to outsource much needed American jobs will be closed and anyone who vote against it (certainly the Grand Outsourcing Party and the usual ConservaDem suspect).

1. Critz ran a lot of ads here in PA-12 attacking Tim Burns support
of tax breaks for companies that outsource jobs. They were effective ads!

20. because most don't know they ARE funding tax breaks for outsourcers...Kerry made it a campaign issue
in 2004 and corpmedia avoided discussing it, even after he brought it up in the debates.

11. Say what?
"The proposal, expected to cost nearly $112 billion, <...>"

So eliminating tax breaks *costs* $112 billion? Is what is meant that it will *cost business* $112 billion, which means $112 billion in revenue for the government?

I'm missing something.

12. No, it has to be a cost to government, doesn't it? The money that business pays in taxes could have
Edited on Tue Jun-01-10 09:32 PM by patrice
been spent on something else that is, somehow, a higher revenue producer for the government, so the difference between that and what the government is receiving in the newly revoked tax cuts is a net negative $112 billion?

This is about who gets the benefit of the revoked tax cuts, American workers' with jobs, compared to who gets the benefit of the tax cuts, corporations doing whatever they do with the tax cuts from jobs that they have in either case.

24. I don't think....
...this makes any sense. :( The removal of a tax cut doesn't create more cost for the US Government. Indirectly it may cause some businesses to move offshore (although not many), but I don't think that the government would include that potential loss in their estimate of costs associated with legislation. I think they more likely meant that we currently loose $112 billion to these cuts.

17. I noticed this too.
I see no reason, none whatsoever, that eliminating a tax loophole should involve additional costs to taxpayers. That makes no sense. Now, it's too late at night, but in the morning I think I'll have a look at that legislation. Sumfin funny goin, here.

23. It was just part of a larger bill
http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h4213/show

OpenCongress Summary

This bill would extend the filing deadline for existing tiers of unemployment benefits until November 30, 2010. COBRA health care subsidies for the unemployed would also be extended. Other provisions in the bill include an extension of the current rate of Medicare payments to doctors and dozens of targeted tax cuts. The total cost of the bill is estimated at $127 billion, with $43 billion of new revenue being raised by closing tax loopholes affecting wealthy individuals and corporations. Much more information about the bill can be found at this blog post.

It is huge! It has a boat load of provisions including extending unemployment benefits.
I couldn't even find the part what ends the tax breaks for outsourcing. http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h4213/show

25. Considering she damned well knows this has no chance of passing in the Senate, this is meaningless.
But, I guess you never know. Maybe Reid actually wants Democrats to win in November and will force Republicans to filibuster this in October. It's one issue that could be a rallying cry to Democrats, but since most Senate Democrats are also free-traders, I'd still consider this DOA in the Senate.

30. i damn disgusted with making excuses to retain Blue-Dog DINOs.
Democrats should not contribute one damn dime for their reelection. It is past time to target these bastards that do not support the party platform and start giving massive contributions to real Democrats in their districts. To hell with these right-wing pigs whose only interest is feeding at the public trough. How can any American, Republican or Democrat justify a vote to assist corporations in out-sourcing American jobs by giving them tax breaks? I can expect it of the treasonous Republican scumbags, but I can't tolerate it of Democrats.

32. But Obama has surrounded himself with them. Rahm, Geitner, Paulson etc.
This legislation is Necessary...to start saving American jobs it needs to be more costly to outsource than to just do it or make it in America. Remember when Wal-Mart signs said all products made in America. Now these monopolies pay for slave labor overseas. Greedy bastards should join them...overseas.

on creating a wedge issue than solving the problem of ooutsourcing. Why not address outsourcing directly? I'd more impressed if the Dems had a history of fighting against outsourcing, but they haven't. They've been complicit in facilitating it.
