Sen. Scott Brown says too early to repeal ‘’don’t ask’ policy
Edited on Tue May-25-10 04:57 PM by Mass
Too early? When will it be time?

From what I heard on NPR, he wants to make his own investigation and wait for the Pentagon.

Not surprise, as the guy is a tool, but ...

BOSTON — Sen. Scott Brown says he can’t at the moment support a repeal of the military’s "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy that bans gays from serving openly in the military.

Brown said Tuesday it would be premature to repeal the law ahead of a Pentagon report on the policy due in December.

The Massachusetts Republican said in a statement that he was keeping an open mind, but can’t support moving ahead until he was confident that repealing the ban won’t jeopardize the military’s mission. Brown is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The White House and gay rights groups support a bill that would repeal the ban but also allow the Pentagon to continue its review of how to implement the new policy.

Congress could take up the bill as early as Thursday.

And what he said, for those who have the courage to decrypt his thought.

"I am keeping an open mind, but I do not support moving ahead until I am able to finish my review, the Pentagon completes its study, and we can be assured that a new policy can be implemented without jeopardizing the mission of our military," Brown said in a statement provided to the Globe.

Considering this is a man who, a couple weeks ago, said getting his office painted was a highlight of his Senate career, this could take some time.

And he cant even say his state opposes it, given that polls show people in the state support repealing DADT by a large majority.

16. LOL. He is not the brightest bulb around, is he?
The New England public is receptive on gay rights (except maybe Maine). I don't get why he is opposed. I would think it would help his reelection to vote yes.

7. He votes yes on every other issue....
.... but I'm actually surprised at this one. Thought he was more moderate when it came to social issues.

12. No, he did not. He just voted yes on a few issues he knew he could not

avoid voting yes to have a chance of being reelected.

In addition, his YES vote on the financial bill was a way to make sure that the bill would not be better or at least that the Senate would not vote on GOOD amendment.

As for being socially moderate, it is hard to know why people here give him so much credit. He is not, by any mean. By MA standards, he is a RWer, so it is no surprise to find him straddling the same line as Ben Nelson or Jim Webb. He is just an opportunist who, a few months ago, was considered to be a social conservative until he understood that would not get him elected and now finds that using this type of language (keeping an open mind, wait until the study is completed, ...) allows him to pay his dues to the freepers without looking too bigoted.

11. This was a common GOP tactic during the civil rights fight in the 1960's -
"These things take time" - "Slow down" - Do it gradually"....just like the piece by piece health insurance "reform" the GOP wanted - let's start again from the beginning to make sure everything is right.

It is bullshit - delay forever while saying "someday, but not yet..."

They never change, except to get worse.

I guess he wouldn't be a Republican if he were ever right.

15. How does he expect to win in '12 in MA against a stronger opponent in a presidential year
when he is taking stands like this? this is a tailor-made issue in which he could have shown the "independence" he claims he has.
