Two Democrats Drop Out Of Race For Stupak's Seat

Two of the three Democrats running in the northern Michgian district of Rep. Bart Stupak are now out of the race.

Connie Saltonstall and Matt Gillard dropped out yesterday, with Gillard endorsing the only remaining Democratic hopeful, state Rep. Gary McDowell, and Saltonstall complaining about favoritism on the party of the party's chairman.

Before Stupak decided to retire, Saltonstall had been challenging him from the left, with the backing of abortion rights groups. But Democrats had been worried that without an abortion foe like Stupak on the ballot, their chances of keeping the seat would diminish.

In ending her candidacy, Saltonstall accused her state's party chairman, Mark Brewer, of not only making that calculation, but acting on it.
