This is interesting:

Yet as a young writer for The Princetonian, the student newspaper at Princeton, Ms. Kagan offered clear insight into her worldview. She had spent the summer of 1980 working to elect a liberal Democrat, Liz Holtzman, to the Senate. On Election Night, she drowned her sorrow in vodka and tonic as Ronald Reagan took the White House and Ms. Holtzman lost to “an ultraconservative machine politician,” she wrote, named Alfonse D’Amato.

Where I grew up — on Manhattan’s Upper West Side — nobody ever admitted to voting for Republicans,” Ms. Kagan wrote, in a kind of Democrat’s lament. She described the Manhattan of her childhood, where those who won office were “real Democrats — not the closet Republicans that one sees so often these days but men and women committed to liberal principles and motivated by the ideal of an affirmative and compassionate government.”

She also plays poker and has been known to smoke cigars.

It's also interesting that Obama has chosen two women for the Supreme Court, both of whom grew up in New York City, went to Princeton for undergraduate work and Harvard for their law degree. Those last two life experiences are shared by Michelle Obama.

1. Both good signs. Poker - or Bridge - provide good training for wheeling and dealing in small groups
Seriously, it's a good sign. It's not solitary. Women of her age don't generally have enough experience playing in groups like that. You want to win, but not so much as people no longer want to play with you.

3. Sounds like she might be fun to have around...

For all of the things recently written about Kagan, some factual, some specious and speculative...it all comes down to her being intelligent enough to understand The Constitution and apply it to the lives of Americans.

Some people may argue this, but I don't want an ideologue on the Court, they tend to be inflexible and that is precisely what we don't need taking a seat on the Court. We have enough of that in Scalia and Thomas...two remarkably ideological individuals that are dragging this nation to 3rd world status by their incredibly stupid decisions.

The peripheral "issues" are pretty much meaningless, they have little to nothing to do with the office she most likely will ascend to. There is a "feel good" aspect to some of the speculation, but the reality is, I hope she would be capable of understanding the Document she will be required to uphold and make decisions by. The frightening prospect of Scalia and Thomas on the Court will be buffered by a thinking individual that can apply the law to the People, as opposed to various "institutions" that have been established.

Like everyone else, I know little of Kagan. What I do know about me, is that I don't care about her sexual orientation, I don't care about her gender, I don't care about what religion she professes to follow, I don't care what kind of vehicle she drives...what I do care about, will she bring some balance to a Right leaning court that has made some disastrous decisions.

For what ever reason, many people in this nation are afraid of intelligent women, I don't get it, what is this "fear" of intelligent women and how in God's name did we ever get to that point?

It will be interesting to see what the GOP comes up with, I'm willing to bet the "arguments" against her will be swill from the cauldron of innuendo...one thing seems to be a given, on paper, Kagan looks to be a damn good nominee.

7. I totally agree with you on this.
The person that a Dem puts on the court doesn't have to be a fire breathing ideologue. They just need to be able to understand how the rulings on the court effect people. Some people say Kagan has no "intellectual curiosity" but I see it differently. Justices like Scalia and Thomas are not curious at all. They never step out of their comfort zone to think about anything.

14. Plays poker? Smokes cigars?
She'd get my vote!

Seriously, I also don't want an ideologue, but someone who understands the law and how it applies to all Americans.

Just for perspective.

5. Finally a "good old girl" who make the boys sit up and take notice
I can't stand to even smell cigars, but if someone ones to smoke them, what's the problem. And pinochle requires more brain power than poker but what the heck, people like what they like.
