Gov. Gary Herbert is lengthening his lead in Utah's 2010 gubernatorial race -- so much so that political observers say it would take a scandal or some other serious misstep for him to lose.
The Republican governor is outpacing his Democratic challenger, Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon, by 31 percentage points, according to a new Salt Lake Tribune poll.
That's a wider gap than three months ago, when the governor had a 25-point advantage.
It's not that Corroon has lost ground. He just hasn't gained any. The mayor's support remained unchanged in the latest poll at 30 percent.
Herbert, on the other hand, improved his backing from 55 percent to 61 percent of the vote, according to a survey of 400 registered Utah voters by the Washington, D.C.-based Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. The poll has a 5 percent margin of error.
