I'm not crazy about Obama's plans for NASA myself... but WOW.
I just read this article...

http://www.politico.com/click/stories/1004/armstong_obama_hurting_space.html

...about what Neil Armstrong had to say about Obama's plans for NASA and the US space program. I largely agree with Armstrong's criticisms. The WOW part is the comments section at the end... the teabagger/freeper/birther contingent is out in force!

Since space travel can't be "unionized,"community organizing had nothing to do with space exploration, and Barry Baracks desire to pay everyone to do his bidding (congress on Obamacare, Russia on space travel, arab nations on attacking Israel) then we must assume his budget priorities for NASA have no real priority in his administration.

Barry Barack does what he does best. If a union can't be helped then he wants nothing to do with it.

Outstanding letter American Hero’s and distinguished Gentlemen but I can assure you our current President has no interest whatsoever in showing the superior quality of American ingenuity or capability to the rest of the world.

Anyone with more than a few brain cells will realize that this moles intentions in any and all areas are not in the best interests of our country or people. This perversion of humanity must be stopped before he destroys our country and constitution.

Of course, you know that if Obama had decided to spend more on the space program, these same nutbags would be screaming about taxes and "wild spending", maybe a few them in a paranoid frenzy about something like freedom-destroying satellites being launched to detect and steal their precious guns.

A side note: I just noticed that every quote I pulled demonstrates an inability to understand when and where to use an apostrophe. I didn't have to try for that, it just happened.

3. What a wretched and nasty man. Strongly disagreeing is fine but this man
is no hero.

What an ugly man

So ugly that what I might think about NASA decision is just beside the point.

btw, I know what Obama wants to do but is it actually up to him? It doesn't have to go through Congress?

5. I don't think the text above in block quotes is from Armstrong.

4. Never read Politico comments.
It's not good for the blood pressure. :)

That being said, I do think Obama's space policy, while containing a lot of good ideas, isn't well thought out and completely lacking in a specific goal or destination.

6. Buzz Aldrin is on board with the plan
Thats good enough for me.

The argument, I believe, is that the Aries project is not developing new technologies that are needed. And therfore the money is not well spent.

7. Thanks for that..
"The White House is responding to criticisms of the plan with a defense from Armstrong's Apollo 11 crewmate Buzz Aldrin (at right in the picture above), the second man to stand on the moon.

"We need to be in this for the long haul, and this program will allow us to again be pushing the boundaries to achieve new and challenging things beyond Earth," Aldrin said in a statement provided by the White House."

15. Armstrong believes heavily in states rights.

Not exactly screaming Democrat to me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Armstrong

I think the most important thing is their arguments for and against Obama's plans.

8. This is "change" and guess what many don't like it.
The program couldn't continue down the path it was going.

9. I do believe this is a mistake.
However, my right-wing relative was in favor of closing down the NASA project. He's probably a cross between a greedy bastard and a fiscal conservative.

13. It is not a mistake!
The NASA program is about pushing the limits of science and developing new technology...The Constellation Program was about using old technolgy. I seriously doubt Obama is making decisions without thinking it through or without good advice! Folks who say otherwise have not followed Obama closely.

17. I am an eager student.
I read that Obama was going in another direction after I posted. It sounds promising. Any money he can send to this part of the State would be a good thing.

18. I'm willing to be convinced Obama's plan isn't as bad as it sounded to me at first...
...but I'm certainly not crazy about the indeterminate time gap with no LEO launch capability of our own.

At any rate, it was the unhinged teabagger madness that really caught my eye. Who'd have thought they'd be so protective of a socialist program like NASA. :)
