The Importance of Appointing a WASP
With John Paul Stevens retiring from the Supreme Court, it is incumbent upon President Obama to replace him with the most blue-blooded jurist he can find! Should he do otherwise, ho-lee fuck, I can just see the secessionist idiocy expanding to 17 states. (And not all of them in the South, either.)

Ethnic politics have always been an active force in America, and you and I shall be LONG dead before that changes, sadly!

3. I would guess that
white anglo-saxon protestants actually are under represented on the bench compared to what they are in the general public.

Roberts, Thomas, Kennedy, Alito, Scalia and Sotomayor are all Catholic.

Breyer and Ginsburg are Jewish.

Stevens is Protestant.

Not that religion should be a qualifying factor for the replacement. Just pointing out that Protestants are currently a little under represented in lieu of working on my paper that is due tonight.

10. The Black, Brown, Yellow, and Red will take over.
People don't want to antagonize the racists and keep the status quo for fear of what the OP talks about.

8. Is David Boies a Protestant?
Edited on Fri Apr-09-10 12:09 PM by Nancy Waterman
He is terrific but I don't know if he would want the job.

On edit: he is 69 and probably too old to be considered. We need to expect decades from a good liberal.

11. I don't agree that it has to be a "WASP" neccesarily
But there are 6 Catholics on the court already, so I'd say they are over-represented already.

16. I can definitely see the pragmatism of your argument.
On the other hand, the sooner we get rid of all the "historic first" storylines, the sooner we can all move on with our lives and just argue merits (at least in theory - I know it would never be that simple). I look forward to that day. In which case, if he can nominate a bisexual, Asian-First Nation-American, transgender atheist that could survive the process, I'd be all for it.

At the end of the day, I have two qualifications: 1) the most liberal justice that would survive the Senate and 2) the youngest person that would survive the Senate. That's all for me.
