When will the GOP learn not to mess with Rachel?
Tom Coburn made some disparaging comment about her being emotional, and she just eviscerated him on her show.
Once they get in her crosshairs, she really goes for the jugular and is incredibly effective. And all she uses are the facts. It is a beautiful sight to behold.

2. I often think that people running against GOP incumbents/candidates would
do well to just show some Rachel footage. She always lays it out concisely, counters each claim with the facts, and makes it easy to understand.

8. She will take anyone --GOP or not -- to task.
She is he real deal. She pays it out, she connects the dots and she calls it as the facts present themselves.

She is far more non partisan than people really want to think she is.

47. I don't think they underestimate her at all.
The fact that they try to discredit her (i.e. both Coburn and Scott Brown) indicates to me that they are absolutely aware of her and are scared of her. I love that they always come out looking like idiots too.

I like to watch Keith Olbermann (love his bold comments), but for concise information, I always watch Rachel Maddow.

15. Not according to less biased sources than Newsbusters.
The Newsbusters cited 'source' is an opinion piece in the entertainment section of the L.A. Times from April, 2009. A year old? Seriously? :eyes:

How about data from this quarter?

http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/03/30/msnbc-beats-cnn-in-1q-2010-in-primetime-and-in-total-day-among-adults-in-march-first-time-since-2001/46635
“The Rachel Maddow Show” finished well ahead of CNN’s “Larry King Live” in 1Q, up by 20 percent in total viewers (920,000 vs. 767,000) and 18 percent among Adults 25-54 (238,000 vs. 201,000). The advantage was even greater in March, with Maddow up by 58 percent in total viewers (1,067,000 vs. 676,000) and 55 percent among A25-54 (268,000 vs. 173,000).

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/30/business/media/30cnn.html
Mr. King’s audience dropped 43 percent for the quarter and 52 percent in March. He dropped to 771,000 viewers for the quarter from 1.34 million in 2009. More alarming perhaps, Mr. King, whose show has been regularly eclipsed by Rachel Maddow’s on MSNBC (and is almost quadrupled by Sean Hannity’s show on Fox), is now threatened by a new host, Joy Behar on HLN (formerly Headline News.)

19. Citing CNN is not a very good means of comparison.
Edited on Fri Apr-09-10 08:07 AM by totodeinhere
All of CNN's primtime ratings are down across the board. These days it's not much of an accomplishment to beat your competition on CNN. A more accurate measure of how Rachel is doing would be to compare her present numbers with what they looked like a year ago. In in that measure, her ratings have tanked. (In fairness, other MSNBC programs were also down.)

All MSNBC programming was down double digits compared to Q1 of '09. Monday to Sunday, MSNBC's primetime for the quarter was down -15% in Total Viewers compared to Q1 of '09 (-22% demo). "Countdown" was down -26% in Total Viewers (-42% demo), and "Rachel Maddow" was down -25% (-38% demo).

(The emphasis was mine.)

http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/ratings/q1_2010_ratings_msnbc_down_double_digits_tops_cnn_in_prime_156755.asp

I am citing Mediabistro.com, a trade publication without any particular political agenda one way or the other.

Meanwhile, Hannity on FNC continues to out rate Maddow by better than two to one. I would say that objectively speaking, Rachael is not doing too well.

BTW, what you cited was an MSNBC press release and hardly an objective description of what is really happening. Of course in their own press release they are going to put the best spin on things that they can.

35. I agree with your dispute of old editorials. But that data I cite is current and it's from a...
neutral source. Look, I am a fan of hers. And I wish her well and I wish more people could watch her. But I am not going to bury my head in the sand and assert that she is getting good ratings because that just isn't happening. Losing to Hannity by better than two to one and losing 25% compared to last year just doesn't cut it.

Rachel has integrity, something that the GOP lost after TR was president, (briefly returned under Eisenhower, but died for good immediately following Ike).

Rachel has that rare combination of intellect, courage and integrity...she is in a class by herself. When one adds that she actually likes her job and has great delivery skills, her power is amazing.

The GOP, and some D's, cannot hold a candle to her, on the few times she errs, she owns up to it immediately...when's the last time you saw an R do that?

27. Recap of the segment
Oh, my Dear Rachel. What anger you hath wrought.

Maddow has been stirring up the c-street hornet's nest.
A little history:
Coburn and Ensign are "renters" at the house on c-street, owned by the family. Included in their rent is maid service, a cook, a 12 bedroom home, lavish digs. The people who live there pay anywhere from $600 to $900 a month. The going rate for accommodations like that in the DC area - over $4,000 a month. She has brought this to light and people are investigating. The congressmen who live there have not claimed the discounted/subsidized rent on their IRS forms as income, they have not claimed it on their disclosure forms as donations, nor have they reported it to the ethics committee. Big no nos. Their rent is being subsidized by a secret religious group and not being reported to anyone.

Coburn is now losing it. he is quoted as saying Rachel Maddow is reporting on this from an "emotional" perspective. He would have been wise to ignore her, but then he is not a wise man. She excoriated him last night.

Coburn has blocked the extension of unemployment benefits on the grounds it is not paid for, he even imagines himself the hero of this. the few people that will feel pain from my actions is nothing compared to the pain of future generations that have to pay for this. I am taking a brave stand.

The only problem with his "brave" stand - Coburn voted for the unpaid for tax cuts by boosh, plus 2 emergency supplemental war funding bills, both unpaid for. he also has another problem with paying as you go. When Pay-Go was voted on a few weeks ago, he voted against it. So if he was serious about Paygo why does his record show, just the opposite?

Ensign had an affair. Coburn negotiated the bribe paid to Ensign's mistress' family. Ensign will most likely be indicted soon, because of that payment and a few other shady dealings. Coburn has repeatedly stated the he only "rents a room" at c-street. When the affair and bribe became public and Coburn's involvement he had this to say "is privileged communication" that he "will never reveal to anybody. Not to the Ethics Committee, not to a court of law, not to anybody."

A double whammy of confidentiality. Except when it wasn't.
Coburn later said he counseled Ensign to end the affair and to go public with it. If Ensign followed his advice, this would not be a scandal now.

So he did talk about the advice.

"But where in the c-street house did this conversation take place? Did the OBGYN Coburn give his medical advice to Ensign in the bedroom he rents? His spiritual advice in the bathroom? So who pays your rent Senator Coburn?"

Maddow then shows a clip of Coburn crying during a senate hearing, talk about who is emotional. Amazingly enough Maddow reports this without one single tear.

You must be believing all the hype about him, because he was never anywhere close to being objective. He carried water for Cheney and Rove and the entire neo con bunch. He skewered Democrats on the flimsiest of straw man arguments, but Cheney told blatant lies on MTP and Russert let him get away with it. I stopped watching MTP because of that.

Maybe once upon a long time ago he may have been good. But no. There's no comparison.

One of the biggest "Christian" phonies in the Senate --

Another member of "The Family" -- rent $833 per month.

A doctor who wants to prevent medicare care for Americans --

A prime negotiator in the Ensign "affair" --

And still preventing extension of unemployment benefits which families desperately need!!

And another GOP hypocrite on "paying for stuff"!!

Let's call this guy's office every day -- !!!

54. So that emotional thing is what right wingers do to take women down?
Some male tried that on me once a long time ago on the job and I told this jerk, who was trying to micro-manage me without any authority to do so, to get out of my way and go do his own job. Then he cut in saying I didn't have to be so emotional about his trying to help me, and I told him he must have me confused with his wife, because she has a reason to be emotional living with him. I didn't realize until Rachel's show last night that it was a way of "handling" women.
