The Beck Factor at Fox: Staffers say comments taint their work
By Howard Kurtz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, March 15, 2010

In just over a year, Glenn Beck's blinding burst of stardom has often seemed to overshadow the rest of Fox News.

And that may not be a good thing for the top-rated cable news channel, as many of its staffers are acutely aware.

With his celebrity fueled by a Time cover story, best-selling books, cheerleading role at protest rallies and steady stream of divisive remarks, Beck is drawing big ratings. But there is a deep split within Fox between those -- led by Chairman Roger Ailes -- who are supportive, and many journalists who are worried about the prospect that Beck is becoming the face of the network.

By calling President Obama a racist and branding progressivism a "cancer," Beck has achieved a lightning-rod status that is unusual even for the network owned by Rupert Murdoch. And that, in turn, has complicated the channel's efforts to neutralize White House criticism that Fox is not really a news organization. Beck has become a constant topic of conversation among Fox journalists, some of whom say they believe he uses distorted or inflammatory rhetoric that undermines their credibility.

Ailes has occasionally spoken to Beck about the negative tone of his 5 p.m. program. And Beck, in turn, sometimes seeks Ailes's advice.

<snip>

Some Fox insiders say Ailes and his staff deserve much of the credit for Beck's new prominence, both by giving him a platform suited to a conservative audience and granting him the freedom to say what he wants. But with that freedom has come constant controversy.

More than 200 companies have joined a boycott of Beck's program, making it difficult for Fox to sell ads. The time has instead been sold to smaller firms offering such products as Kaopectate, Carbonite, 1-800-PetMeds and Goldline International. A handful of advertisers, such as Apple, have abandoned Fox altogether. Network executives say they believe they could charge higher rates if the host were more widely acceptable to advertisers.

That's the one I'd get--perfect for travel, perfect bedside box. I love my iTouch, but it's really too small to do much surfing of the intertubes, at least with my fifty-year-old eyeballs.

17. Ah, Fox in general, not just Fox News? I believe my point still remains.
I mean, it's never been a secret (to those who choose to see) that Fox News wasn't already a hyperneoconservative propaganda machine (as opposed to a legitimate news organization), long before Beck's arrival.

Not meaning to rain on any parade, after all a good thing is always a good thing.

41. You miss my point. Perhaps it's my fault.
It has nothing to do with "what I want them to do".

I've tried every way I can think of to explain it, and obviously it's not working as well as I'd hoped.

Sometimes that happens.

Cheers.

15. It says a bunch of advertisers are boycotting Glenn Beck,
but a few, like Apple, are boycotting Fox in general.

"they're fine with Fox News except for Beck" would be accurate for those companies only boycotting Glenn Beck.

31. Wait just a minute lol
Even a cheap car costs $14,000 now a days.
So it is cost effective to repair it if under 5 years or 75,000 miles.

A cheap computer costs $400, so it is not cost effective to repair it.

32. A motherboard is 50 bucks.
CPU maybe 100-300. No reason to buy a new box.

I have 10 year old computers running in my house, and some 20-year old relics that I clean and run from time to time.

I *did* have a $14,000 computer in my house, but, well, it was a waste of energy.

back in early 1970's my company purchased a "mini" computer for $250,000.
It was the size of a medium refrigerator and had 1/100th computing power and
data storage capacity than my $399 PC from Wal-Mart.

I recall the brand was General Automation. It was basically a IBM 1130 clone.

26. The right (specially Drudge) despise Apple because Al Gore is on the Board of Directors
Apple is among the most influential and successful of all American tech corporations, and Steve Jobs rarely let's it show any political leanings... yet Apple has been pegged leftist for decades. Though it was AL Gore's presence on their Board that puts them on Drudge's hit list for smears. Even though their hero Limbaugh is a mac fanboy, Apple is still a liberal threat to them. The Beck/Fox advertising ban is going to bring them out protesting in front of Apple Stores ... but you know that most of them will have an iPhone tucked into their pockets. :7
