CNN Poll: Obama approval up in wake of health care victory
Posted: March 29th, 2010 06:54 PM ET

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday indicates that 51 percent of Americans approve of the job Obama is doing in the White House, with 48 percent saying they disapprove.
Washington (CNN)

– Passage of the landmark health care bill appears to have boosted President Barack Obama's approval rating, but it has not affected his re-election chances so far, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday indicates that 51 percent of Americans approve of the job Obama is doing in the White House, with 48 percent saying they disapprove. That 51 percent approval rating is up five points from a week ago, before Congress approved the health care reform bill and the president signed the legislation into law. Four in ten respondents say they disapprove because Obama is too liberal and 6 percent say they the president is not liberal enough.

Eighty-six percent of Democrats questioned say they approve of the job Obama is doing, a surge of 12 points over the past week. The poll indicates that 47 percent of Independents approve of the president's performance, up 6 points in a week, and 12 percent of Republicans give him the thumbs up, basically unchanged from a week ago.

"Some parts of the Democratic base, particularly lower-income Americans and union households, appear to be coming back into the fold," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Obama's approval rating changed the most among Americans who make less than $25,000 a year - the group that is most likely to benefit from the new health care law."

5. NOT ALL POLLS ARE EQUAL..
Poll: Most Florida voters oppose health care law

Poll: Most Florida voters oppose health care law

By KEVIN WIATROWSKI | The Tampa Tribune

Published: March 27, 2010

TAMPA - A majority of Florida voters say they oppose the new health care reform law, with the strongest opposition coming from those 65 and older, according to a poll released today.

Statewide, 54 percent of voters opposed the bill signed this week, with 34 percent in support of the measure and 12 percent undecided.

Reaction broke sharply along party lines.

Democratic voters supported the measure 57 percent to 22 percent with 21 percent undecided.

Among Republican voters, 9 percent supported the new law, while 87 percent were opposed and 4 percent undecided.

Independents opposed the measure by 62 percent to 34 percent with 4 percent undecided.

Florida Sen. Bill Nelson's support of the reform earned him scorn, with 55 percent of polled voters reporting their disapproval of his vote.

President Obama also took his lumps in the poll. Obama's post-health care approval rating sits at 37 percent in Florida, down from his 50 percent rating in the run-up to the 2008 election.

The Mason-Dixon Polling & Research poll interviewed 625 registered voters across the state this week. The poll had an error margin of 4 percentage points.

Among other things, the law bans insurance companies from refusing to cover people because of pre-existing conditions and will require most Americans to carry health insurance or pay a fine.

In the Mason-Dixon poll, voters 65 and older showed the strongest opposition – 65 percent said they were against the new law, which will close a gap in Medicare's prescription drug coverage but also will cut payments to private insurers offering Medicare Advantage plans.

Slightly more men than women opposed health care reform (56 percent to 52 percent), according to the Mason-Dixon poll. Slightly more women than men supported it (35 percent to 33 percent).

Three-quarters of the poll's respondents were white. Nearly 60 percent were 50 or older and slightly more voted Democratic (43 percent) than Republican (38 percent).

Passage of the health care reform package has not done much to change public opinion about it, with 50 percent of Americans opposed to the legislation and 46 percent supporting it, according to a Washington Post/ABC News poll conducted March 23-26. An overwhelming number of those opposed saying they would support rolling back the changes either in Congress or the courts.

6. You're right, a Florida poll is not the same as a national poll.

What about people in their twenties and thirties, let alone forties? We don't count as much?

Older white voters tended not to like Obama in the first place.

9. the seniors vote in the highest numbers! and we have a senate seat open and a governors seat open!
and the repubs right now have double digit leads over the dems.

And as this poll shows..indy's aren't too happy right now either!

and we now have surpassed another record of unemployment statewide of 12.2%

That would include young people!

11. I know the only polls that matter are the flowery ones..
your opinions are well noted..

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=8036177&mesg_id=8036404

However on my Fla local news tonight, it was stated the CNN poll out today reflect a 56% disapproval of the HCR..and 42 % approval..when someone posts a good poll they should take into consideration that there are other relvant polls being done that may reflect a differing view.

As I said, not all polls are created equal and other polls may reflect areas of the nation that do not agree.

Fla is a pivotal state..4th largest in fact for elections.

But that doesn't stop some from using them.
If it were for polls, Obama wouldn't ever been elected President.

16. Right. But FL is not the rest of the country and it sure as hell is nothing
like Connecticut where I live. So why are you posting a FL poll like it is a poll for the whole United States? In CT, we will most likely keep the Senate seat blue and have a great chance to get Ned Lamont or another Dem elected as the Governor. Obama's approval rating here is in the 50's. But I would never say that CT is like the rest of the US because it is not. Show me polls for the whole US and then we can discuss them.

19. Why a Florida poll? Last time
I looked, Florida has 27 electoral votes to Connecticut's 7.

Older people vote and 65% are against this insurance reform.

Obama's approval in Florida is 37%.

20. People vote from all states, not just one.
Edited on Tue Mar-30-10 10:55 AM by Jennicut
And electoral voting should have been done away with a long time ago or we would have Gore as President but that is another argument for another day. Obama's approval is lower in FL because the # of older people there. Older people that have decided they already have what they want so they can be selfish.
And midterms are not a Presidential election, and electoral votes don't matter.

23. When FL figures out how to properly count ballots on a consistent basis, they can be recognized.
In any case, the majority of the 'older' voters in FL being against this HCR bill is because they've allowed themselves to be brainwashed by the right in fearing that their MediCare and Social Security would be taken away, or drastically cut, by it.

MediCare Advantage is no better than regular MediCare, but the US Government is paying an additional 15% for virtually the same thing, with no significant improvement.

The GOP did a real good job at causing people in FL to be afraid.

Just tell it to the FL voters in a way they can understand. You have a choice to pay $115 for an item, or $100 for another item that is 99% the same as the first. Which would you do? That's MediCare Advantage versus regular MediCare.

As it turns out, President Obama didn't need Florida in 2008 to win the election, and by the time 2012 rolls around, the economy will be greatly improving, the stock market will be very bullish, and the deficit will begin to be reduced.

He'll be up to almost 60% approval nationwide (which is 52% in the Republican polls). He won't need Florida to win in 2012. If the people in FL are still buying into the GOP lies about the HCR bill, MediCare, and Social Security, well then, so be it. Let it go red again. He'll win in 2012 anyway.

is it hating by pointing out a poll from one of the most watched areas in the nation by democratic party leaders?

Yes this poll is in the I-4 Corridor in Florida..the most WATCHED AREA BY DEMOCRATIC PARTY LEADERS.. but you would know that wouldn't you if you worked on more than one national campaign in your lifetime!

18. Pretty good spring so far for Mr. Obama. Not such a good one for
John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, and Mitt Romney.

And I do hope Sarah Palin is having a good time playing the spiritual vandal. Karma has a longer shelf life than Tea Bag outrage.

Recommended.
