Utah gov not taking sides in US Senate race
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Gov. Gary Herbert says there's no reason for his fellow Republicans to question U.S. Sen. Bob Bennett's conservative credentials, but he stopped short of saying the three-term incumbent should be re-elected.

Bennett is under growing criticism from some Republicans who contend he isn't conservative enough, primarily because of his support of a bailout of the nation's banks.

Bennett is seeking a fourth term in office and is facing seven challengers from within his own party.

Whoever wins the GOP nod has a very good chance of victory in conservative Utah. A Utah Democrat hasn't been elected to the U.S. Senate since 1970.

Herbert said Thursday Bennett is a good friend who has served the state well, but he added "I'm staying out of the Senate race."
