Family history given to Michelle Obama
Published: Thursday, March 18, 2010

Last July, it was U.S. President Barack Obama who received his documented family history from the Church, presented by President Thomas S. Monson. Now, his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama, has received a comparable gift.

Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve and Sister Julie B. Beck, general Relief Society president, made the presentation to Mrs. Obama on March 17 at the White House. Present for the occasion was U.S. Senate majority leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who is a member of the Church. Also attending the presentation in the White House were Elder Ralph W. Hardy Jr., an Area Seventy; Elder Oaks' wife, Sister Kristen Oaks; Ramon P. Beck, and David Rencher of the Church's Family History Department.

Mrs. Obama was presented the standard hard copy version of her family history, which was bound in five volumes, and an electronic version of the history. Brother Rencher, chief genealogical officer of FamilySearch, demonstrated the electronic version and answered specific questions asked by Mrs. Obama.

Upon returning to Salt Lake City, Elder Oaks commented March 18 that Mrs. Obama received the printed and electronic versions of her family history "with obvious appreciation and great emotion."

In a statement to news media, Sen. Reid said: "Last year, the Church compiled several volumes for President Barack Obama. This year, I thank Elder Oaks for sharing our faith's tradition of genealogical research with the First Lady and her family. This documentation of their lineage will be cherished and passed on for future generations. I am honored that the Church can play a part in documenting the history of the First Family."

Mrs. Obama's family history was compiled when Elder Oaks was chairman of the Church's Temple and Family History Executive Council.

1. That was nice of them. The Mormon Family Library is a tremendous resource for all genealogists...
... doing research. You don't have to have any sort of relationship to the LDS church to use it. My late mother used their library extensively in writing her 4 books of family history.

I hope Michelle, the girls, and their relatives find much to enjoy as well as mysteries solved.
