Krugman on ABC's This Week...disgusted!
Edited on Sun Feb-28-10 04:36 PM by babylonsister

QUOTE OF THE DAY.... ABC's "This Week" held its usual roundtable discussion this morning, with Elizabeth Vargas hosting a panel of Cokie Roberts, Sam Donaldson, George Will, and Paul Krugman.

The last topic of conversation was introduced by Vargas this way:

"{O}]f course, this weekend, we have a brand-new White House social secretary appointed to replace Desiree Rogers, a close friend of the Obamas who is exiting after a bumpy tenure, I would say. Cokie, you spoke with her. She -- she was highly criticized after the Obamas' first state dinner in which she arrived, looking absolutely gorgeous, but in what some people later said was far too fancy a dress, but most importantly, that was the state dinner that was crashed by the Salahis, who walked in without an invitation when the social secretary's office didn't have people manning the security sites."

This led to a surprisingly long chat about Desiree Rogers.

Krugman sat silently while the discussion went on (and on), before eventually interjecting:

"Can I say that 20 million Americans unemployed, the fact that we're worrying about the status of the White House social secretary....

Donaldson responded, "Paul, welcome to Washington."

Look, I realize that not every discussion on a show like this is going to be substantive, sophisticated, and policy focused. Not every post I write for this site is going to highlight critically important issues, either. There's nothing wrong with including heavier and lighter subjects in the same public affairs forum.

But this panel discussion covered exactly four subjects this morning: health care reform, Charlie Rangel's ethics problem, David Paterson's latest troubles, and the fate of the former White House social secretary (and where she's from, what her clothes looked like, what her next job is likely to be, etc.), which hardly seems relevant to anyone who doesn't actually attend social events at the White House.

In this same discussion, there was nothing about the jobs bill that passed the Senate this week, nothing about the incredibly important Zazi guilty plea this week (and the fact that it makes Republican talking points look ridiculous), nothing about Jim Bunning single-handedly delaying unemployment insurance for those who need it.

I wonder, who was the target audience for the discussion of Desiree Rogers, who most Americans have never heard of, and whose White House position has nothing to do with public policy? The general public or the D.C. cocktail circuit crowd?

Krugman no doubt annoyed the show's producers by mentioning the inanity of the subject matter, but he's right to remind his colleagues of what matters. For Donaldson to "welcome" him "to Washington" was insulting -- to Krugman and the rest of us.

2. It didn't help that Cokie Roberts and Desiree are old friends.
I watched and was equally disgusted with the choice of topics, but so goes mainstream media...down celebrity row.

3. O/T-but Elizabeth Vargas (and every other "anchor" I saw today on the subject) claimed
we need 217 votes to pass the bill in the House when it's 218. Even Chris Matthews used that number. Why?

16. This is another quote from Vargas
in the comments section of Steve Benen's article..

"Here's another quote of the day from that show by Vargas "We know that Americans don't support health care in general."

http://www2.washingtonmonthly.com/mt/mt-comments.cgi?entry_id=22633

Is she being disingenuous or just grossly misinformed?

43. yeah, didn't you know that Americans really don't like health care
They just love losing what little they have left when they or their family members get sick. And, didn't you know that MOST Americans have health care by and for the corporations that they just absolutely love. Of course, more and more Americans are losing their decent jobs, so I wonder how many americans really have great health insurance.

Well she probably is spouting right wing zombie quotes--and may believe every word she speaketh.

40. Oh, yes. The term "Early Onset Altzheimers" has also occurred to me.
Edited on Mon Mar-01-10 08:17 PM by Demoiselle
But it occurs when contemplating a certain former baseball star turned senator who has stopped the machinery of government in the most obstinate and nasty way.
Perhaps we have an explanation for both sets of behavior.
Sigh.

42. Your Alzheimer's reference is beyond insensitive.
When one's parents and several family members and friends have died of this horrible disease there is absolutely nothing funny about it.

Not only that but you can not spell ("Altzheimers") or, apparently, use spell check. So who has a problem?

18. Cokie and Sam are especially insufferable.
They think they know it all. Big-time Washington insiders. Have lost all touch with regular America. And George Will is not far behind them. I find him a little more interesting though, to listen to--he has some substance, although it's conservative substance and I often disagree with him. But I avoid that show, preferring to catch Will's column in the paper instead.

32. That's what I am thinking. I gave up watching these tired old
DC club members a long time ago. They are interested only in the DC social scene and that's who they were talking to. I'm surprised that Krugman didn't know that already. They aren't even smart people, just old, boring DC party goers. I have never heard any of them say anything interesting, but the Media knows they are 'safe' and will not rock any boats in DC and that's all our 'free press' has to worry about.

Watching them is like listening in to some elderly dowagers at a country estate gossiping about people they know in their inner circle. That it still passes for any kind of 'news' tells us the state of the US media.

30. so, what did Krugman say to that idiotic remark?
An answer like donaldson's is pretty dysfunctional. (like the entire media)...

But you have to try to break through, at least a few more times.

I sure hope K didn't let that slide. If it were me, I'd say something like, "The question remains---what are WE going to do about that, Mr Donaldson?" Or something to that effect.

Of course, I'm not there, I'm just armchair punditing it.

but godDAMMIT it pisses me off when people let themselves be SILENCED by the fucking dysfunctional shitheads. I learned some basics, through long painful experience, about what's dysfunctional and how to stand up to it. You DON'T just sit back and say, "gee, ok, guess you told me a thing or two.... *whimper*"
