I owe a thank you to one or more DUers.
Over the past number of weeks, I've been getting more involved in posting on DU. Previously I lurked alot but didn't post a lot because I noticed that many get pretty belligerent if one doesn't agree with them. I also noticed that I could watch as one person would be clearly trying hard not to step over rules, but maintain their position, while the other would get into the mud and muck and cross the line. Unfortunately I didn't always see the muddy entity's posts get deleted.

So for a few weeks, I got involved with posting leery that I would be able to maintain within the rules when the likelihood was that I would piss off a few people. It has been challenging sometimes to know when to "walk away" from some of the posters on certain threads, but for the most part I feel I have. I don't alert on such posts because to alert when I'm being attacked feels like a crybaby or a tattleteller.

But here's what I've noticed, and would like to thank whomever is responsible. When I return to those threads later in the day or the next, those muddy little posts and subthreads have been deleted, but my comments or POV regarding the topic still remain. Since I'm not alerting on any of these posts, that means someone(s) is/are alerting essentially on my behalf, and of course on behalf of the quality of the board as a whole.

So THANK YOU! Thank you very much.

1. This has happened to me also
And I want to second that.even though I can handle myself its good to know that there are others out there with the knowledge what is truly a debatable subject and what is just plain ugliness in behavior.

2. Thank you for letting us know
how you were feeling.
Believe ne, there are many of us that are long timers that hate the negative posts, not so much because of the message but because of the put downs of another.

At first I rarely alerted because when I hit the button nothing seem to happen. Maybe my button was stuck??

Anyway, when I see injustice now, I alert and for the most part, my button works pretty good now.

So don't be afraid to us it.

3. Actually the rules about not allowing personal attacks are good ones
and it isn't being a tattle tale to alert on someone viciously attacking another poster. If no one alerted on the attackers they would turn DU into an exceedingly hateful place very quickly. Personal attacks are what bullies do and letting them do it because of some childhood 'rule' makes you the bullied.

4. And some of us know who you're talking about, at least today. She is a bully who hurts her cause.
