I don't have a real clue, at least none I'd stake my DU membership on. Can anyone help me out? Thanks in advance.:)

18. I think Rubio will be a candidate eventually. Not sure if it will be 2012 or later
With these two year campaigns lately, he'd pretty much have to announce he's running as soon as he gets sworn in as a Senator if he's running '12.

8. Pawlenty. Certainly not because he's any good, but because Romney
will see the Tea Party crazies gathering forces to run Palin on an indy third party, making his potential nomination uncompetitive with Obama.

Romney would make it close one-to-one against Obama. With Palin (or some other kook) leading a third party of nutbags and screeching secessionist morons, the percentage Romney needs to carry say, Pennsylvania, drops below the competition line. Obama sails in a field of three.

Huck acts like he's already out for good, which is fine with me.

Too early for Thune.

There's no guarantee for the Pukes that Obama will be sufficiently vulnerable to knock off.

Pawlenty picks up the torch and runs but loses.

Obama is a two-termer if he wishes to be.

47. Too soon to tell. GOPers have to thrash it out with the Baggers, who may
field their own candidates. I think the GOP is trying to determine whether to jump to their center or to go right with their candidates, and they won't decide till they have better insight into how the Baggers will go.

I THINK the Baggers will field their own candidates, and the GOP will find some luke warm guy they consider a "centerist", but they may go even farther right.

Remember, many GOPers think McCain is a Liberal and that's why they lost...

50. If we grocery-list the GOP's options, it sure looks like a weak bench:
Edited on Sun Feb-28-10 10:03 AM by saltpoint
Dick Cheney. I don't think so.
Condi. I don't think so.
Petraeus. Not out of the question but he doesn't seem that interested in the job.
Mitch Daniels.
Mike Pence.
Rudy Giuliani. Snowball-in-Hell Division candidate.
Ron Paul. I doubt it.
Tom Ridge. I think Ridge is too thick to be a presidential candidate.
Thune. Maybe for 2016.
Mark Sanders. Uh, no.
John Ensign. Uh, no.
Pawlenty. He wants the job but currently there are only I think 29 people pledged to vote for him.
Jindal. If only the electorate were more inclined toward clueless right-wing exorcists, he'd have a chance.
John Boehner. Agent Orange. In his defense, I will say he dresses nicely.
Jeb. His older brother kind of ruined it for Jeb.
Paul Ryan. Prepubescent neocon.
Newt Gingrich. Hybrid outcome of a Pokemon character and The Michelin Man.
Santorum. He's...I don't know... too repellent to win over voters' hearts.
Romney. He's loaded but the base still is edgy on that Mormon thing. Plus he's a creep.
Huckabee. He doesn't seem to crave the job at this point. Charming, but unstable.
Barbour. Good god, y'all.
Palin. If she loses in Iowa, which she will, I think she bolts for a (probably) long-planned third party fringe run on a burn-the-Constitution platform.

Evan Bayh. He sounds to me post-announcement like the candidate he has in mind for an "independent" ticket is himself.

Michael Bloomberg. The demographics don't favor it but money does talk. And the man doesn't have anything else to do.

however if you look at the massive amounts of money lobbyists have invested in McCain, we could see him again.

IMO Republicans would have to insane to push him again. It's likely they won't reveal who it will be for as long as possible to avoid scrutiny from opposition.

It's true many fundies don't care for Mitt's religion and it won't matter to the most independents.

If she gets the support of the RTL leadership in Iowa, She wins. Bypasses NH and goes straight to to South Carolina to face off with what ever Repuke is left standing after NH.

She will get 40% of the vote if there are three candidates left she will get 60% if it just two andidates because no candidate will go after her as unqualified because they will look like a bully.

After wins in SC and Iowas... she will be prohibitive.

84. Romney
The GOP is far more deferential towards the candidate who is perceived as having earned his turn. Even John McCain and Bob Dole, who were never popular with the conservative base, were nominated in large part because it was "their turn".

Romney will have money, insider support, and a relatively weak field of opponents. Palin is batshit crazy, Barbour is an oily con man, Daniels probably won't run, Huckabee has found his calling as a right wing Dr. Phil. I can't see the Republicans nominating a relative unknown like Thune or Cantor over a safe, boring commodity like Willard.

Democrats are far less likely to accept the Establishment pick. George McGovern beat out Ed Muskie, Jimmy Carter won against Mo Udall and Birch Bayh, Gary Hart came within a hair's breadth of beating Walter Mondale, and Barack Obama beat out Hillary Clinton. In 1992, Paul Tsongas and Jerry Brown each won a sizable number of primaries and caucuses before Bill Clinton locked it up. You rarely see that sort of thing on the GOP side (Iowa, where religious groups dominate the GOP caucus, is the exception).
