17. PDF file warning on that. Thanks, tho.
For some with older computers, slow connections, a blind link that opens a pdf can be unfortunate.

I don't mind, just wanted to warn others.

I try to always mention it in a reply if I link to one.

76. Pukes made a MAJOR MAJOR mistake not coming in with actual proposals offsetting the Pres. plan
They would have done much better had they brought in actual specific ideas (including process):

Things like we can cover more people this way blah blah blah, we think we can cut cost by this much if we do blah blah...etc.

I think they just wanted to show up, attack as much and as often as they can, and DEMAND everybody just stop everything, and start over.

Because they're screwed and they know it. They don't have a plan and under their philosphy, never will have one. So they have to retreat into obstructionism. Death throes of a dying era...

Sounds like they want more time to undermine public opinion with BS and to simply put it off.

113. I think they suck. I had a Section 125, managed by a private corp. Had to anticipate annual costs.
(Now I know HSAs are not the same as Section 125s)

Section 125: Had to keep and submit receipts at the end of the year in order to enjoy the tax break.

How are you supposed to know what your cost will ahead of time???

So I put away like $50/month, held by the private third party.

Do you know what happens to YOUR money if you don't submit the paperwork for the amount withheld?

They KEEP IT!

Fuck that shit.

Just make all medical expenses deductible.

178. I thought Obama missed one hell of an opportunity ...
... after one of John McCain's fits, when McCain misleadingly lectured Obama on the Gang of 14 compromise to avoid the so-called "nuclear option."

Obama should have challenged McCain *right then* to agree to the same compromise as the Gang of 14 deal -- the Democrats would agree to not exercise the so-called "nuclear option", changing the Senate rules to eliminate or limit the filibuster, if the Republicans would agree to a simple up-or-down democratic vote on health care reform.

(comment re: Obama's general effectiveness omitted)

214. Americans care about results and effectiveness ....
Edited on Thu Feb-25-10 06:01 PM by krkaufman
... and after a year we're yet to see the results. As for effectiveness, the fact that we're 13 months in and still diddling around on health care pretty much ends that debate. We're in crisis on several fronts and Obama seems to be continually in a state of analysis paralysis.

Obama could have politely framed the response to McCain as...

"John, here's a good example of where we can find agreement. I agree with you that the spirit of that compromise, the so-called 'Gang of 14 compromise', to avoid the 'nuclear option' should be heeded in this debate, and think I can speak for my Democratic colleagues in committing to the maintenance of existing Senate rules and in welcoming your commitment to a simple up-or-down democratic vote on the health reform package."

As Obama left it, he allowed McCain's mischaracterization of the 'Gang of 14' compromise to go unchallenged. Weak.

209. No... that is up to Pelosi and Harry Reid
It is not his place to decide congressional strategy in this public forum over Reid and Pelosi. He, of course will be influential with both from the sidelines, but there is a separation of powers.

216. Yes, of course he couldn't get an *actual* agreement ...
... but he could have effectively forced one, or at least cemented the image of hypocritical Republicans.

Simply suggesting that Harry Reid would likely welcome John McCain's commitment to extending the 'Gang of 14' compromise to the health care reform vote, committing to a democratic up-or-down vote on the legislation precluding any modifications to Senate rules.

211. That was riveting! Too bad the majority of Americans did not have access
to the entire summit because of our not-so-free press.

Please flood your local cable/satellite providers with letters and calls demanding that C-Span channels 1, 2, & 3 be made available in their basic packages.

The press (MSNBC, CNN, Fox) did all that they could to hide, spin, and pervert today's event. F**ckin' tragic.

212. I was freaking out at the start of this, but I feel Dems came away with a good result.
They spent the afternoon forcefully taking on GOP misinformation and they did a great job of it. Especially framing GOP resistance as endorsing discrimination and segregation. Very powerful.

Another frame I liked was, why is it great, Repubs, when you have government-funded healthcare, but socialism when anyone else does?

Obama was actually more candid in his closing remarks than I expected. Very strong, very honest closing.

I'm impressed. I freak out when I think Democrats are letting Republicans define them, so please excuse all my yelling earlier. :)

I've only been watching a few minutes and, so far, I've seen Wolf Blitzer summarize the minutes allotted to each party and the President, and was just subjected to nonsensical suggestions submitted by Internet idiots.
